Reading a news story about someone who had an iPhone snatched and then Apple ID changed. Most of the important stuff was sorted, but apparently Apple refused to grant access to the iCloud, so all photos were lost.

I was wondering if having Shared Photo Libraries would protect against this risk?

According to Apple if the initiator of the library wants to delete it or remove access, ALL participants have 7 days to accept ALL photos (not just the ones that they added).

This would also seem a fairly fool-proof way for Apple to accept that this was the stolen iCloud, and give access back to the originator...

own your backup strategy. I have a 3-licence iMazing subscription, it backs my devices up over Wifi to a computer.
I've not used a licence because that comes into play when restoring.

but own it yourself, don't rely on a provider and some hope.....

Couple of tips:

1: Create an offline backup
2: Enable "Stolen Device Protection" on your iPhone
3: Use ScreenTime (pin protected by a different PIN to your phone unlock) to prevent changes to Accounts, Passcode & face id.
