Constant ache under right rib for 3 weeks, clear ultrasound
Discussion
Just wanted to know if anyone has been through simular. Back in May this year I had intense paid on the my right hand side just under the last rib and wasn't eating. Eating up been referred to a and e who presumed gallbladder issues. Hade a ultrasound no stones so sent me on my way. Eventually the pain went away and I was back to normal.
3 week ago the same thing has happened, went to a and e had another ultrasound. No gallstones or inflammation also had all bloods done on liver pancrease etc all have come back normal.
Just stuck with what to do next? The doctor at hospital did suggest a endoscopy if it continues but I will have to convince my GP first!
Had a appointment last Tuesday to discuss results etc they said to comeback in 2 weeks if it's the same. Mentioned maybe a stomuch ulcer but they dismissed that straight away.

I've had similar pains to you, really excruciating pain under my right rib, the first 2 times it happened (6 months apart) i was eating relatively greasy food so assumed it may be gallbladder related. It eventually eased after 30-40 minutes but was still tender for a while afterwards. I was already seeing a gastroenterologist for other stomach pains so mentioned it to him. He doubted it was gallbladder related but referred me for an ultrasound which was all clear.
I then had colon transit study which showed the transit of faeces through the colon wasn't as quick as it should be but wasn't particularly bad. A follow up xray showed a lot of boulders of faeces building up and trapping air. His advice was to take Magrocol sachets on a daily basis (2 sachets but 1 is working for me).
On a follow up appointment he found an older xray which showed lots of trapped air in the colon which he put down to swallowing air, maybe due to stress. For this he recommended breathing techniques or Paroxetine (which i'm not taking) as i'm finding the Magrocol has made a big difference. In his opinion this was the reason for the excruciating pain. Here's an explanation from the Hopkins Medicine website;
Abdominal pain and discomfort - Gas in the intestine causes pain for some people. When it collects on the left side of the colon, the pain can be confused with heart disease. When it collects on the right side of the colon, the pain may feel like the pain associated with gallstones or appendicitis.
He also performed an endoscopy to rule out anything else and apart from some inflammation (expected because i have Ankylosing Spondylitis and Psoriatic Arthritis for which i'm on biologics) all was normal.
It should be noted i do have Bupa cover through work so the above was done without having to worry about waiting on the NHS.
I do still get a few pains in the right side but they are nowhere near as bad, are not that frequent and usually pass within a few minutes. I put this down to air passing through the colon.
Let me know if you need any more information, i'm happy to share my experience.
Cheers
Simon
