Hello

Had a test drive in a 2014 Mini Cooper the other day - very impressed with it, only done 40k miles and apparently has just had a new clutch.

Service History was good and the inside looked like new.

Is there any reason to run away from these or anything a need to check - it will come with a breakdown warranty cover which is some reassurance but not as good as a proper warranty.

thanks smile

Nothing out of the ordinary to check.

Based on the same robust design as the 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder.

Engine mounts can deteriorate, but not a big expense to replace. Maybe check that the steering column moves in and out OK.

40k sounds a little soon for a clutch.

Possible paint scuffing on B-Pillar on 3 door cars.

Otherwise, no horror stories.

I'm guessing this is just from people getting in an out?

I only ask because the 2014 I picked up a couple of weeks back has not just scuffs but identical gouges on both B pillars. Worn right through the topcoat almost down to the primer, same place both sides.

Very weird, like they've had two very large people wearing Brillo pads getting in and out both sides three times a day.

I'm going to respray the door shuts to resolve it when I sort out the bumper scuffs, they are that bad.

The door rubbers rubbing through the paint is a common issue on the F56 Mini. You can repaint it it's bad or fit some clear PPF film over the effected area.

Would have never thought of that, makes sense and explains the wear on the rubbers as well.

Its bad enough to need repainting but thats a sunny afternoon job. If I keep it then a bit of PPF would be a good idea.

Cheers

Apparently you can get pre cut PPF on eBay just for this job.

Just buy a sample piece of PPF for 99p and cut it out yourself.

As others have said, not much to look out for.

Ours is on 63k miles and has been faultless.

Standard service intervals are 2years or 18k miles (whichever first) so the car should have had 5 services as a minimum regardless of miles.

Both my daughter’s cars seem to chew through brake pads. The price at Mini to do them is absolutely outrageous, so I just DIY them for under £50.

The door pillar thing will affect all of them unless PPF’d.

My elderly mother bought a new 1.5 F56 Cooper in 2014 when the model was first released. She still has it but only done 15,000 miles! Car has been very reliable. The only thing needing fixing was the drivers door shut paint rub issue that was sorted under warranty and a recent replacement of the drivers side window regulator at a local garage. The power steering rack feels a bit graunchy but the Mini main dealer has inspected and says it’s fine.

Thanks folks, I seem to have found a bit of an issue frown

Had a really good look around the car and found a good inch or so of water in the boot where the tyre sealant is kept - apparently is a fairly common issue and not easy to resolve !

It is frequently either the hatch unlock button surround seals, window wiper arm seal or rear light cluster seal.

I've had one of these for the past 10 years. It has been faultless. I was pretty ticked off when the road tax DOUBLED. (to £20. It is now £35 or thereabouts. Ahh... the cost of living nowadays...)

I've got a reminder from the DVLA on the desk right in front of me now. Renewal due January 1, 2025. They are asking me for £35 for one year.

Both are correct.

2014 - 2017 (March) cars are £35 per year.

2017 (April) - Present cars are £190 per year.

This is due to the government changing the taxation bands.

Both are not correct regarding my car tax. I said my car tax is now £35 or thereabouts and indeed it is £35. Anyways, the 2nd generation Mini Cooper is a fine runabout (regardless of what Clarkson said about it back at the time), very cheap to run. If you can find one in good condition then snap it up.

I wasn't refering to your car tax, just the general taxation of this generation of Cooper.

If we are going to be pedantic, a 2014 1.5 Cooper (F56) is actually the 3rd generation 'new' MINI.
