Virgin Media, Internet Phone
Discussion
We have started with an issue on our landline where the phone (different handsets tried) will ring, but we can't answer the call.
I've tried different handsets and you can hear a crackle as you press and release the button thing, but no dial tone. This is when connected to the landline plug on the wall.
I've also tried the internal test point in the socket and that is the same. So, it's either the cable, the line or something very different.
VM are also slowly rolling out the new system of plugging into the router back, but I've not been told that I'm on that yet or haven't received an adaptor.
Anyone else had similar??
Of course I will try a new cable first to eliminate that.
(wish my dad was still alive as he was a BT engineer)

This could be virginmedia, I was told by a couple of people that my VM landline was always engaged. I checked and no dial tone, VM online diagnostic pass. So I called VM to be told my line was switched off as they are rolling out digital internet lines. They are sending an adapter to I can connect via the VM router. My burgler alarm autodialer now won't work either. Nice of them to let me know in advance, poor customer service again from VM.

They've disconnected landlines around here. You now get an adapter to use the router rather than the socket on the wall.
The only time I ever used our landline was to talk to Virgin about a broadband fault...
It’s only the mother in law that calls it as she can’t move into the 20th century! I’ll happily let it die as it keeps the bundle price down. The only time I ever used our landline was to talk to Virgin about a broadband fault...

Im a VM tech, could be the master socket, could be the cable from the master socket, or it could be the cable back to the street cab. Best bet is to call and get a tech out, they will either fix it, or migrate you to 21cv, where the phone runs from the back of the hub, they will probably do the latter.
Alternatively, just ask customer services to switch you and send you a dongle.

I had an issue with my Virgin landline. Couldn't get a dial tone and the phone didn't ring for incoming calls. It made a little click but nothing more
I suspected the internal wiring but didn't want everything pulled up so asked Virgin (via their forum - best way to do anything with them) if they could just move me over to the router based service. We weren't due to be moved over but they agreed to it there and then. Agreed that it was stupid to try to fix the wire if it was easier to move us across and we'd have had to do it in the coming months anyway.
Daft thing was though they still had to send out an engineer. All they did was arrive, check I'd plugged the phone in right and then phone the call centre to transfer the line. All done in less than 5 minutes. Total waste of the engineer's time
Anyway, been working fine ever since. Not that we get any calls on it other than spam
