Hi all, I'm currently looking for another 911. Previously owned 997.1 GT3, 997.2 Turbo, 991.2 GTS, 992.1 C2S.

I had been thinking about a 991.2 GT3 and doing some track days but in reality this probably won't happen very often with a young family. I'm now considering a 992 Turbo S as they are about the same money and I can get the kids in it. I'm thinking I could do the odd track day still but have a car I can use year round.

What are peoples ownership experiences? I didn't really bond with the 992 C2S but various reviews say the Turbo S is much better.

Also, there seem to be hardly any for sale on the Porsche Approved used list now. Where have they all gone? I'm sure there was a glut of them at some point in the past?

Thanks

Hobo

Obvious first question would be what didn't you like about the 992 you had already ?

Well I bought one of them ( turbo s cab).

Lovely car. Well specified. 18 way seats are comfortable ( I run comfort tyre pressures ).

Blisteringly quick. Clearly you can't use the top speed but the acceleration is fun / frightening depending on your point of view.

Sounds better than a 992 base which I had before. It is a better looking car with the spoiler and side vents.

What would you like to know ?

Personally I’d still buy a 991.2 GT3 and ask RPM to fit rear seats and belt.

If turbo I’d also go for a high spec unmolested 991.2 turbo s from an OPC or reputable Porsche indy.

Couldn’t gel with a 992 myself on so many levels. All the modern tech , pings, bells , whistles leaves me a bit cold. Try both. If a 991.2 turbo s exclusive series turns up that’s the turbo to have.

I agree with Jeremy. I have a 24MY Turbo S cab. I don’t have lane assist/blind spot etc so the only thing I have to turn off (via the diamond) button is start/stop. So, no annoying bongs etc (at least no more than a 991). 992 tech is good from my perspective - good mix of screen/physical controls. I do have adaptive cruise which I use and works well.

Quieter and more compliant than the GTS and GT3 I drove and, as I haven’t tracked it (and don’t really intend to) all the online stuff about track performance etc is irrelevant to me. Its capabilities far exceed mine and it’s a great daily driver for road use. Sport exhaust is better sounding than I’d expected. Goes like a scalded cat

It’s not ‘quiet’ but certainly is quieter than a 992 GTS or GT3 (and the new Aston Vantage) if that’s important to you

Oh, and now I have wheels that won’t fall off!

I have gone through a similar car history as the OP. For many years I had a 997.1 GT3 - tracked it, plenty of road trips, loved that car. Then we had children (3) and I found I wasn't using it much. I then had a 991.2 GTS Targa for a couple of years. That saw plenty of use, as there was space for two full size child seats in the back (just), but it didn't get used on track, and I didn't drive it 'roof down' as much as I anticipated. The GTS was sold (I had the opportunity to sell for what I paid for it). After a brief Porsche hiatus, I was keen to get back into a 911 earlier this year.

My brief sounds very similar to yours - space for the children, meaning I can share the fun, and importantly - use the car much more. Makes the school run more of an event. Special enough to look forward to each drive, but (relative to other options at this price point) fairly low key. Something I could take to the track a few times a year, a few road trips with friends, and Sunday morning drives.

I spent much of the last year procrastinating and, like you, narrowed my choices down to (i) a 991.2 GT3 with a rear seat conversion (ii) a 992 GTS or (iii) 992 Turbo S. I tried out all three, but decided that going for a car that is under extended warranty and 'fully OEM' was right for my anticipated usage.

I picked up a 992 Turbo S earlier this autumn, and am delighted with my choice. Two backless boosters in the rear for the children and have another booster up front, if the third is riding along too. It has already been to the track, and was great fun. This was perhaps a little surprising after my 997 GT3 days, but still very much feels like a 911, and sounds really rather good - especially in the upper rev-band, and goes without saying that it's very fast, without feeling sterile. I'm using it regularly - not quite on a daily basis, but any excuse (including the school run this morning, and shuttling between activities and excursions on the weekend). For my stage of life, it's a great fit. Only downside is a cabin rattle, which is getting sorted under warranty next week. Other good points - I like the modern tech, and I like the 992 cabin design. Sounds good, and without the sport exhaust activated, in 'normal' mode, it's not shouty at all, and perfectly pleasant to cruise around in. Turn on the sport exhaust, or pop it in sport mode, and sounds really purposeful.

Hope that helps!

This summer I did trips to continental Europe in 991.2 Touring and 992 turbo S and enjoyed them equally, which I think reflects well on the turbo S.

Specific points of difference. The matrix lights on the turbo S are noticeably better than the PDLS on the Touring.

PCM6 is not to my taste. I prefer PCM4 for navigation with its ability to input coordinates. I have also had Android Auto retrofitted albeit not wireless.

Folding buckets in the Touring are my preferred seat, but the 18way in turbo S are reasonably comfortable for long days.

991 is a smaller neater looking car which the absence of a fix wing improves.

Turbo S has immense performance and better fuel consumption viz the Touring.

Cabin rattle is not great and given the price of the car simply not acceptable.

I have been on a rattle crusade.

Sound proofing in doors ( unexpected radical increase in bass ) and under rear seats and the rear " wall " of the cab behind rear seats which was a rattle box.

Yesterday

- front tweeters rattle ( hit the dash or speaker grill and hear it). Solved

- footwell panel with 12v socket. Solved

- seatbelt covers where the front belts emerge. Solved

- lift up wind blind when in down position - solved

- battery cover panel under bonnet ( dealer said they were a good place to start for apparent dash rattles - solved.

- rear side panels. Rattle on the passenger side at the top. Solved.

I have an intermittent drivers seat squeak left ( not had it for a while to be fair ) and anything else I find on my next " test drive ".

Will also sound proof the rear arches next week.

Porsche need to try harder !

992 seem terrible for rattles/build quality of cabin. Having said that the 991 are much older these days and rattles will have developed so not immune. My 991 TS has plenty of rattles.

While I cannot comment on 992 vs 991GT3 , I have a GT4 and the TS and they are very different for different uses. The steering feel is way ahead in the GT and you’re plugged in to the action much more. However saying this the turbo is a much better steer than say a straight C2 and not as harsh as a GTS imo. I really like it and I get to use it every day. I question if I really need the GT car as the turbo so 90% of the fun factor (in a different way).

Agree with this.

Having owned every iteration of 911 since my first, that being a 996 Gt2 in 2005 the build quality of the 992, especially Cab is shocking. Both of the Turbo S that I owned had multiple visits into Porsche to rectify the rattles only for most of them to appear a couple of weeks later.

Asides from that it’s a cracking piece of kit, the rattles were the only issues over 2.5 years and 30k miles of daily use.

I have done 21.000 km in my 992 GT3 Touring and use it as my everyday car - sort of. The biggest issue as an everyday car is the cabin / road noise. It is very loud - especially if you go fast on the German Autobahn. Secondly if you need the rear for luggage, the access to the rear space is compromised by the bucket seats not folding. I track my car and for this I wouldn’t change it for anything else but if that is not on your agenda, I would go for a turbo or GTS as a daily. Also, I always drive it in “Sport” as the “Normal” mode produces a dreadful resonance in the cabin - and the “Stop/Start” which is a pain.
