Ok, schmaltz free is an ask! I'm after suggestions...

2000 miles
Driving home for Christmas
Fairy tale of New York

That kind of thing. Not Bublé, although listening to the radio the other day it sounds like he'd agree. hehe

Darlene love - christmas (baby please come home). amongst the best girl group / Spector songs and the best Xmas song there is imo.

Ella fitzgerald and louis Jordan - baby it’s cold outside

Elton John - step into Christmas

I also think Brenda Lee’s rockin around the Christmas tree avoids the schmaltz.

Covers of?

Good call on Dylan, I’d love to hear a proper hearty hoe down version of that.

I was going to say the fall’s version of hark the herald angels sing but just listened to it and it’s cheesy AF.

The Kinks - Father Christmas

Never heard the covers. The original is a Motown-esque belter. It’s all in the delivery, last verse especially.

Any of Kate Rusby's Christmas albums. The voice of an angel - a mix of folk & traditional. Definitely not Asda supermarket fare for the 3 months leading up to 25th Dec.
