2006 Focus ST-3 2.5 Duratec FAULT

Yesterday I bought a 2006 Focus St-3. Driven for 4 hours faultless and smooth. 94k Miles FSH. Then at around 40MPH it started to jolt and stutter like it was misfiring/wouldn't produce power. I decided to stop the car and turn it off. It smelt strong of fuel but unburnt outside. When I tried to crank it white smoke/steam came out of the exhaust and smelt of fuel also. It wont turn on. After a few cranks the smoking has stopped. I don't have a code reader right now and "engine system fault" is on written on the dashboard. Any Ideas where I should try looking to trouble shoot this? It did not overheat, coolant looks clean and so does the oil. I don't suspect head gasket...

Has the car been remapped at all?

I’d check the ignition side given the fuel seems to be flowing. Coil pack (assuming not coil over plug design)? Perhaps a decent diagnostic test first.
