Just a general question on MOTs.
I bought a 1998 Jaguar and had a mechanic provide a full inspection for me before purchasing.
6 months or so later it has failed it's MOT. 5 minor fails but the big one falls under advisories.
Under advisories it states twice (left and right) 'excessive corrosion within 30cm of the seat belt mounting DANGEROUS'
No mention of this in the mechanic report. It falls under advisory. But Halfords (who did MOT) said I need to sort this problem out first and that I need to take it to an auto welder who will probably charge me £4000 for the work.
Given that I have the mechanic report that doesnt mention this at all, and that this falls under advisory, but Halfords are basically saying it can't pass without it, should I just take it for an MOT somewhere else and see if I get a different outcome?
The whole point of getting a mechanic report before I bought was to try to avoid this sort of thing.
Is another MOT assessor going to look on the database and see what Halfords assessor saw, or do I have the option of seeing someone else says something completely different?

A dangerous fault as an advisory? Halfords say it won't pass without the 'advisory' welding?I bought a 1998 Jaguar and had a mechanic provide a full inspection for me before purchasing.

When you say £4000 for the welding, do you mean £400?

If your cars has failed on a fault marked 'dangerous', this would not be marked as an advisory. Advisories are not fails.
From the government website on MOTs
"You can be fined up to £2,500, be banned from driving and get 3 penalty points for driving a vehicle that has failed its MOT because of a ‘dangerous’ problem."
The welding is unlikely to cost £4000, I think you may have put one zero too many.

Rust can be well hidden and hard to spot, an old jag is very likely to have some.
An advisory is just that, so not dangerous. but may be in the future. Also 4k does sound alot.
Find someone other than Halfords to have alook.
Op says it's advisory, then says it's marked 'dangerous'! Surely contradictory? I'm thinking he's misread the fail sheet and/or inebriated. An advisory is just that, so not dangerous. but may be in the future. Also 4k does sound alot.

As the op has just joined it would suggest he doesnt know alot about cars, and was asking for advice, so mine stands, get someone other than a main dealer or a fast fit place to have a look before spending any money.I would also be surprised if we ever hear from the op again.
Are you sure the corrosion was down as an advisory - it sounds very odd they've put "Dangerous" when under an advisory.
It might help if you were to post up a picture of the relevant part of the failure sheet, or copy and paste the info from the MOT history site so we can see what they've put it down under.

If it is just an advisory then it definitely won't affect any subsequent MOTs. Another tester might find it insignificant and not even put an advisory down, or might fail the car depending on their assessment of it.
But if Halfords have put it down as an advisory, if you get the other faults fixed ASAP and get it retested by them, they will only test the failed items not the whole car.
Either way it needs repairing, but if it was definitely only an advisory then I'd wait until it passes with the other faults fixed first.
No idea where the £4k came from, I've had 2 outer sills replaced on a similar age jaguar for a tenth of that cost! Depending how bad it is, and precisely where, £400 would be a reasonable figure, could easily be half that though.

Agree about getting someone else to look, but if it's failed on a dangerous fault, he can't drive it. Op you need to get a mobile welder to come out and quote.I would also be surprised if we ever hear from the op again.
Wouldn't be surprised if your last point was correct!

You would be wise to take a photo of the MOT failure certificate (blank out the reg and chassis number for security) Then we can see what they actually advised or failed.Under advisories it states twice (left and right) 'excessive corrosion within 30cm of the seat belt mounting DANGEROUS'
Sounds to me like a manual advisory. Which sounds wrong. Should be one of the following if its excessive.
manual said:
(a) The strength or continuity of the load bearing structure within 30cm of any seat belt anchorage (a ’prescribed area’):
(i) is significantly reduced or inadequately repaired - Major
(ii) anchorage likely to become detached in the event of a collision - Dangerous
Both of those are Fails (RFR)(i) is significantly reduced or inadequately repaired - Major
(ii) anchorage likely to become detached in the event of a collision - Dangerous

Anyone can look at MOT history. https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/
Put the reg in
Thanks for advice, I been avoiding looking at the answers cuz I thought I might not like them (plus I'm off work with stress at the moment due to work issues - additional car stress was the last thing I needed!)
£4000 is what Halfords told me. THOUSAND not hundred.
Reg is S920VPV
I'll take a pic of the sheet

They have got the MoT itself badly, badly wrong as those lines marked Dangerous are fails not advisories and have also given you a finger-in-the-air know-nothing quote for welding.£4000 is what Halfords told me. THOUSAND not hundred.

I'd go somewhere else. Find yourself a local MoT garage with decent reviews on Checkatrade if you don't have anyone local to give you a recommendation.
