Apologies if this subject already has a thread, but the PH seach function is useless and didn't bring it up, a google search didn;t seem to grasp my meaning and brings up multiple Reddit discussions on related but inexact themes.

If you will allow me to weary you with a simple question which will also allow me to cheat in a pub argument/debate and gain some kudos amongst the barfly intelligensia.

Examples of UK/US top 40 singles that were originally album tracks but were shortened for 7 inch release

e.g. Radar Love - Golden Earring

Midnight Summer Dream by The Stranglers, a much longer song on the album (6:12-odd) but down to around 3.40 for the single. It was also re-recorded to have more sung vocals, the album version has a lot of spoken vocals at the start.

I can think of Black Betty by Ram Jam, the one I remember hearing on the radio didn't have all the instrumental bit, but I don't know whether that's just the radio play version or indeed whether there wasn't one, and the radio stations just didn't play that bit.

I saw the title of this thread and thought “Hello, has Greg Wallace been posting on here?”

Off the top of my head:

Papa Was a Rolling Stone - The Temptations

Album version was over 11 minutes but the single is just under 7. I think.

Time Has Come Today - The Chambers Brothers

Album version - 11.05 with two single versions of 3.05 & 4.45.

Bonus point of an earlier and different version to the 1968 hit was a 2.37 version released in 1966.

Pretty sure Common People by Pulp misses out a whole verse on the 7inch version.
