Hope someone can help:-
My Nad 5120 has suddenly started making a noise from within the enclosure ???
Its doesn't appear to be from motor or platter.
>
when switched on with platter removed the noise is quieter - when touching the motor spindle drive wheel it's still the same?
There's nothing obvious fouling?
I'm stumped - any Ideas

There isn't much in a turntable that can make a noise.

Check the belt is running smoothly.

Check the motor, is there rubber mounts that have perished? Does it run smoothly if you turn it by hand.

Check the bearing for play, clean it out and lubricate

Thanks for that - yep I've checked everything you suggested - i'm baffled where the noise is originating from - with the Nad you have to remove platter to see the motor etc I've had the deck since 1980's maybe like me it's getting Old!!

Sussed it !
It was due to the Motor sitting on it's original mounting foam ring [see pic] which after almost 40 years has lost its original damping/springyness !
This means the motor was sitting without anything to dampen the motor vibrations on the chasssis and must be causing the chassis etc. to echo/vibrate & make the noise. It's hard to describe how noisy this is.

My bodged replacement is 6mm thick foam which I found at home, sadly this is too thick IMO - but when fitted and squashed between the motor and chassis reduces the noise output significantly. Surprisngly there's less noise generated on the 45RPM speed setting!!
To effect a permanent fix I'll have to find some original spec~4mm thick foam.
Hope this helps other's who may have similar noise problems

Hooray!

The body of the deck will be a literal soundboard.

Enjoy!

After the major noise problem - I decided to upgrade my Nad by doing some small mods which had occasionally in the previous 40 years caused minor 'issues' but which I couldn't be bothered to look at at the time:-
The speed change sometimes 'didn't want to' - Having already removed the motor and replaced the foam isolator - I carefully adjusted the sliding steel change mechanism to allow a smooth action, and also removed some metal from the area which occasionally fouls on the pully on the 33rpm setting - see pic.:>

I added some 'blu tac' to the arm rest to Hold/prevent the arm moving whilst the deck is out of use
I removed some plastic from the cable cover to allow the cover to seat without Jamming the Motor cable which may have contributed to the noise - see pic
I disconnected the Front red 'ON' led which may have contributed to the noise.
SImple things which IMO have improved the deck - after the initial noise hassle yesterday which needed a major stripdown to sort - I decided to go down my local Richer sounds and look at the decks they had available should I have needed to buy one - I took with me a few vinyl records to listen to during the demo:-
The sales guy was very pushy and didn't like me comparing the decks using my 'OLD & collectable' records - why?
I tested the £229 project against the more expensive decks [Roksan at £399 - Technics at £799] which the sales guy was pushing, I'd say the Project was the modern equivalent of my Nad 5120 which OOI I also bought from Richer Sounds in 1987 - then it cost £89 including a fitted OM5 cartridge which was very poor. If you own a 5120 then I can recommend a Rega Carbon MM £50ish - Goldring 1012 MM £200ish or Goldring 1042 MM £450ish Cartridges which suit the 5120. FYI I also own a Linn LP12 so can compare the Nad to one of the Best TT Decks ever made - in reality the NAD lacks very little compared to the LInn.

This is my opinion which you may disagree withsmile
The tested modern decks sounded poor, even the most expensive was awful when I played Metallica's 'ONE' 12" or Visage's Fade to Grey on both LP or 12" - both these tracks show the weaknesses of any deck - on Metallica's 'ONE' Hetfields voice and the guitar ought to make your Neck hairs stand on end during the intro, a good deck will separate his voice clearly from the guitar - it didn't happen on any of the demo'd decksfrown -- With the fade to grey track the room ought to vibrate with the rhythymns and beat, again it didn't happen on any of the demo's - Richer sounds need to get the demo decks sorted to sell anything in future, of course you can say the amp and speakers AND CABLES 'contribute' to the end result - however for demo's over which I have no control - I'd expect these to be well matched by the shop itself. The TT is the front end from where all the sound comes from, if it doesn't come out of the TT then the amp & speakers have no chance whatsoever of giving you great sound.

I Hope the small mods listed above help you improve your 5120 which is a great sounding deck IF fitted with a good cartridge.
