CAT in Silencer?
Discussion
Hi,
I'm looking at a Supersport R, 2013, Durotech at HWM.
From the pictures it doesn't have a CAT in the exhaust. I queried this with them and they say the CAT is in the silencer, but from my observations its usually a separate unit.
Did some models have the CAT in the silencer, and if so can it be removed as some people have to improve flow? Which is the better system?
Thanks for any thoughts

Some Caterham's are fitted with CATs in the exhaust, although they are not supplied by Caterham like that. When a Cat is fitted in the exhaust they tend to reduce silencer volume and can be louder. If you are looking for a quiet system then use an external CAT. It is worth saying the elements are Motorsport spec and are free flowing. In fact they produce more power with CAT fitted. The main reason for removing them is to prevent possible damage to the CAT during track driving.

Caterham do sell cat in a can exhausts, but they’re usually coupled with the rear exit systems. I don’t ‘think’ you can get a side exit with a cat in a can from Caterham.
If you get the car warm and hover your hand close to the front and rear of the side can, you’ll be able to tell if it’s got a cat. The rear of the can will be hotter as this is where the cat is.

Hi, be very careful, if a road car it Must have a Cat fitted, but we all know about Cat delete kits Etc friendly Mot testers Etc, but don't forget what the ECU wants to see re cold starts and any Lambda sensors ETC if or should be fitted. After the Cat has been fitted get a rolling road print out including Air fuel ratio and cold start values
I had a Cat. bypass pipe on a CSR I owned some years ago, and frankly, could not tell the difference in performance with or without the Cat in place. It looked better without the (separate) Cat but, it was hardly worth the bother of substitution, in the end I sold the by-pass pipe, but didn't tell the guy who bought it he was wasting his money, obviously. He has probably sold it on by now as this was quite a few years ago now.
