Hi where exactly is the oil leak mentioned ? Thanks
Hi there, the oil leak was fixed/found not to be an issue anymore after the MOT. There's a lot of paperwork to this one, but image 174 in the documents and on the second page has the garages notes. The leak came from seal/line to the air oil separator in the PCV system. It turns out that from being in storage whilst I've been mostly away for work, that just starting it and idling it probably caused a minor blockage in the PCV system which forced oil out at this part, and then cleared itself after being driven and more pressure/air in the system. Apparently this is common-ish on VAG cars which have more elaborate PCV systems (the ECU has 8 sensors in the PCV system alone!) for no other reason than being German.
It's a minor annoyance the MOT was redone/passed before the advisory and service items, because it looks like the leak wasn't fixed from a first glance. But the garage was rammed with work, parts got lost in the post delaying it even more, so the essential MOT bits got done first once they arrived and then the servicing and advisory items.
Also, just some general information for anyone who's considering bidding on my baby - the parts question.
How hard is it to get parts for these?
If you asked me that two years ago, the answer would be "it's quite an inconvenience 25% of the time".
However now, I have been stunned at how easy it is to find parts.
Since VW ended support for most of their older cars in 2022/23, they apparently cleared out their stores and VW Classic Parts are now very very well stocked. I've never seen these many. Parts which VW denied having when I enquired, are now in abundance, even the rare and elusive W8 headlights I spent 4 months waiting for a full set in good condition to come up for sale.
You can check the full inventory of parts and the prices here - https://www.volkswagen-classic-parts.com/catalog/e...
You can even get things like the W8 exclusive interior trim coloured air vents, even looking again now, the body plastics like the lower rear plastic bumper spoiler which has faded on mine, can now be got for just £100 - https://www.volkswagen-classic-parts.com/catalog/e...
So whoever becomes his future owner will have an infinitely easier time finding parts for him.

Didn't this sell at H&H Auctions at Buxton yesterday?
No that one's not mine. The agreement for PH Auctions is that this platform is the only place your car can be listed, which is fair and obvious. I did see that one and it's been one I've seen pop up for sale a few times over the last 6 months or so on different sites. I can't speak for it, so I can't draw any conclusions for why. They're a niche car, but there is a good audience for them in the right place, which is why I've listed mine here.chris Goddard said:
Where will this car need collecting from?
I am technically based in Inverness, but I do spent half my time in central Scotland. As is mentioned at the bottom of the listing, I travel about a lot and need very little reason to drive to the end of the country. So if my location is a problem, I can deliver it for the cost of fuel. That said, Inverness airport has 6-8 return flights to London a day, as well as Bristol, Manchester etc.

Hi, I am interested in buying the car. Currently I am abroad. Could we make an arrangement that you drive the car to Birmingham airport. Ideally in between Xmas and New year or straight after New Year. If we come to an agreement the car will stay at yours until then. Thks Andre
Yeah Birmingham is no bother. Just timing wise, if you'd asked me a month ago when I first contacted the PH team here then it'd be fine. But since then I've sold two of my other cars and just seeing what I'd made, decided to/impulsively get my own house, and boy did I underestimate all the other costs of filling a house. It's just simply that I'd like to finish furnishing/decorating and spend Christmas here, so this car selling by then works out great and I can fully move. woodsy99 said:
Please can you advise why the taxation class is showing as disabled on the V5 and waht needs to be done to change it .
When corrected what will be the annual RFL cost?
What has been done to protect the underside from corrosion?
Thanks, Nick
.
Hi there, because I'm a wheelchair user/anyone who gets the higher mobility component of PIP gets free road tax for one vehicle. The last four cars I've used that on have all had that as the tax class once I've done that, it just seems a bit of a waste of paper and time that the DVLA change the tax class and send a new V5. When corrected what will be the annual RFL cost?
What has been done to protect the underside from corrosion?
Thanks, Nick
.
But changing it is really easy, the simplest way is taking the V5 new keeper slip to the Post Office and ask to change the tax class and tax the car. They can do both at the same time. When road tax used to stay with the car, I used to just change it myself and sell it with 6 months road tax, but it's no longer transferable like that.
I have just called the DVLA to double check how much the tax costs. My memory was right, because it's an import and the CO2 data isn't recorded, it is taxed according to the engine size under the pre-2001 bands - which is £345, up from £290 last year.

Hello,
Catalysts are an integral part of the exhaust manifolds.(I can't imagine the time to change them if...) Do you have photos from underside please.
Bernard
Yes you're right the cats are part of the manifold (here's a picture specifically - https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2... they are a bit odd, or not what I've been used to, where the cat is in the downpipe section. With these the downpipe is a separate piece and then it runs underneath. Catalysts are an integral part of the exhaust manifolds.(I can't imagine the time to change them if...) Do you have photos from underside please.

Is it that you're wondering should the exhaust ever need replaced, that you'd have to remove this section too? A custom made exhaust was something I spent too much time pondering whether to do or keep original that I never made up my mind, but both places I went to didn't need access to the engine bay to fabricate a full system.
Or is it's about the cats themselves, it isn't an issue that I've ever seen come up as actually having needed done. This has been a bucket list car for me since I was 15, so I spent 14 years reading up on these and obsessively following forums before I finally saw one, and the cats actually needing replaced isn't anything I ever came across. I have seen people replace them when the engine is out from point of "may as well".
Unfortunately I don't have pics of the underside, I was away when it finally got up on a ramp at the garage as I did want to get them. But I as you've asked, I will see if theres a way I could get it somewhere on a ramp that will let me into the workshop and take pics, but is there anything specific you're looking for and I'll see what I can get myself if a ramp isn't an option?
