Turkish Airforce recently celebrated operating the mighty F-4 Phantom for 50 years, in some style, with an 'elephant walk' and pre-staging a pair of aircraft for lots of runs through the Turkish equivalent of the 'Mach Loop'.

Enjoy....

What a beautiful piece of aviation history. Up there with the BAE Lightening and Harrier as the greatest planes. Amazing that it's still in service.
Yep, completely outclassed by the current machinery and if I was Turkish I’d be worried, but that’s not the point.

The USAF only stopped flying them 8 years ago in a 2nd line role......and they were flying the RF-4G Wild Weasel's in combat missions in the Gulf War in '91 when we were announcing the retirement of it..!

To be really pedantic laugh it was never a BAe Lightning, it was a BAC Lightning, although the pre-production aircraft and first handful of production F1 were EE.

It's over-qualified - you can bomb Kurds with a Vickers Vimy...!

Superb aircraft. I wonder if we could get 10 fighters in the air at the same time?

Love the F4.

I think Greece v.recently retired their F4's i believe after a very long service. Every summer would watch them fly over the Islands. You could spot them easily with the smoke trail.

Sadly several had been lost over the years. Latest was in 2023 on very low level flying exercises. Both pilots died.

Greece now waiting on x18 F-35's

It would be interesting to know the highest airframe hours amongst their fleet.

RAF has got 130 Eurofighter Typhoons and 34 F35s. According to Wikipedia, only 107 Typhoons are operational. Turkey has 245 modernised block 50+ F16s, they're producing more, modernising their production line to block 70, making plans to buy 40 Typhoons and starting to build their own 5th gen air superiority fighter, TAI TF Kaan-MMU as well as an unmanned fighter drone with a supersonic variant, Bayraktar Kızılelma, that looks every inch like a fighter jet. They probably don't need the F-4s all that much, but keeping them anyway, and keeping them pristine, operational and clocking up plenty of flying hours by the looks of it, which is what every pilot needs to keep their skills up. The F4 isn't even listed in the aircraft list of Turkish Air Force.

What have we got that's actually homegrown? Do we build our own fighter jets, whether under licence or designed from scratch? Do we sell fighter jets we build here to other countries? We participate in lots of joint efforts, we provide lots of technical advice, including to the TAI Kaan above, but our government is utterly shocking at utilising our own expertise and invests nothing in the future of our military. Erdoğan is a world class dick who's taken the country back decades in terms of civil liberties, equality and lots of ther stuff, and Turkey got kicked out of the F35 programme for buying the S400 air defence systems, but their military seems to be in a decent shape.

PS They're celebrating 50 years with the F4, not 40.

BAe

Lightning
I'd say English Electric or BAC Lightning myself.

I was correcting the all upper case “BAE” and the unforgivable “Lightening” which really annoys me. Shouldn’t, but it does!

But yeah smile
