Aston Valkyrie smashes Silverstone GP lap record

First production car to go under two minutes on the GP loop

Aston Martin has claimed a production car lap record for the Valkyrie at Silverstone’s Grand Prix layout, with a 1:56.42 lap in the hands of Darren Turner. That makes it more than 10 seconds faster than the previous record holder, a modified GT2 RS that recorded 2:06.83 a couple of years ago. Not a tremendously fair fight, 911 against carbon-tubbed V12 Aston hypercar, but road legal is road legal…

Frankly it’s an absurd time for something that must eventually pass an MOT in the UK, the Valkyrie among some very serious race cars going that far under two minutes. It’s faster than the GT3 lap record at Silverstone, for example, a 1:58.165 in a Huracan GT3 Evo that would have been achieved on slicks. It’s faster than the old GT1 glass of GTs, too, which never got under two minutes. And it’s within fractions of the Formula Renault 2.0 best time (1:56.052) and LM GTE (1:55.762, for a Ferrari 488 GTE Evo). Plus, for some context on mightily rapid against face-bendingly fast, an LMP1 car is almost 20 seconds faster than a Valkyrie (1:37.289) and an F1 car very nearly half a minute (1:27.097). Staggering.

Aston has released a video to mark the moment and show off the frankly bonkers speed achieved by Turner and the Valkyrie. It’s doing 170mph on the approach to Abbey (!), 180mph towards Brooklands, and hits 200 on the Hangar Straight. Often Silverstone GP feels a bit too senior for road cars. Not this one.

It could go quicker still, as there was rain earlier in the day of the record attempt (this is Silverstone, after all), so the surface wasn’t at its grippiest. A bike event had also spoiled the line a bit, reckoned Turner. He added: “The acceleration and top speed is way beyond anything that I’ve raced at Le Mans. With active aero, and the car’s ability to optimise downforce as you accelerate, the speed just keeps climbing… The car performed brilliantly. I’m not sure I had anything more to give, but maybe on a day that was kinder with the conditions we could find a few more tenths if not more. It blows my mind that this is a road-legal car that you can use to drive to Silverstone and then go faster than the pole lap record in the British GT championship.” That’s exactly what Aston did, in fact, the Valkyrie seen pootling along the Northamptonshire lanes as part of the video. Some car. Hopefully there’s an uninterrupted onboard to follow in due course - that should be one hell of a watch.

That is very impressive. Wasn't the original stated aim to be as fast as an F1 car around Silverstone though?

If they ever stated that they were being seriously unrealistic.

I don't think they have ever stated F1 pace

IINM, they were targeting LMP2-levels of performance.

The fact an F1 car is 30s faster really does blow the mind.

Wonder what something like the McMurty would do. I assume it wouldn't be able to get round a lap at full power/downforce?

Really not impressed with this time. The whole "F1 car for the road" thing, it's barely faster than a 911.

Overall lap time is about the same as a 2008 F3 Car, at an average speed of around 113 mph.

I always wonder if a F3 (or an old F3000 for ex) would not be much more fun on the track that those hypercars while costing just a fraction?

matching or exceeding race car times is a feat in itself imo - you have to bare in mind that the new ferrari hypercar even with 1200hp + active aero is slower than 20+ year old Ferrari 360 challenge car around Fiorano by their own admission lol

Is that time on road tyres?

I know the film shows it driving straight from the road through the garage/ pit but if thats on road-legal tyres thats even more impressive given all the other times listed for GT3 LMP, etc will have been on slicks?

They did, and multiple times too.

Here is one direct quote from Marek Reichman: "A 2016 race trimmed F1 car, the [Valkyrie] in its track trim will be faster," Reichman said. "Then you can take the track trim stuff off and drive home."

And, of course, they talked about how it would beat LMP1 too:

From Andy Palmer: “The standard Valkyrie - if you can call it a standard Valkyrie - on road tires would be top three [in] LMP1 [Le Mans prototypes] on track.”

Even if they targeted LMP2 performance, they missed that very badly, as the best Q time for an LMP2 car is 1:40.94. So, you know, only 16s slower... that's within the margin of error, surely?

AND, they are still not done lying even today. In the press release for this lap time, they claim the car can do 3.3G in the corners, although in reality it can do maybe half that if they are lucky (in the video, the G meter conveniently doesn't have the numbers displayed).

Funny how this article doesn't mention any of that, despite AM feeding us this BS for years and apparently still not being done. Do your fking job, you press release retyping hacks.

The comfort level is not the same...

Haha great.

All of the above aside, given the Valkyrie is electronically limited to 220mph, I'd prefer an open top Bugatti that tops out at 282mph if am going to be enjoying myself along a coastal route on a hot summer's day.

Didn’t they have to wind the downforce off due to road tyre limitations?

I drove a 1988 Toyota engined F3 car on a track day some years ago, it was brilliant. Very approachable, no stalling, simple 5 speed H pattern box and not twitchy. Preffered it to the 1994 Forte Corse F1 car that I drove next.

The lap time comparison was for a top amateur, but not professional level, driver in an F3 car. 01:54.581 (F3 Cup, 2019)

Put a professional driver in the car, and the proper F3 lap record is Lando Norris doing sub 01:51 in the 2017 Silverstone GP European FIA F3 championship in a Dallara 317.

Thats now a £ 65,000 car. Is a 230hp 2.0 16v single seater on slicks. You can't nip down the shops in it.

it's on road tyres and apparently they are a huge restriction in the lap times as there's nothing grippy enough which is road legal that exists

The best Q lap for an F3 car is actually 1:43.09 from 2019. Generally not sure why people bring up race laps for a comparison - the Valkyrie for sure didn't have half a tank or more of fuel in it and wasn't on half worn tires when they did the lap. Even Q laps done in competition are not a proper comparison, really, because you only get one or two attempts. For any road car you can do 100 attempts if you want to, or can afford to. If they did that for any race car, the lap times that would come out of that would be even faster than their Q times.

It would be interesting to know a lap time from the Valkyrie AMR Pro which uses 18" wheels and Michelin LMP slicks (amongst other changes)
