Hi everyone

After going through the awful experience of losing my beloved mate of 17 years this week, and at great expense without insurance, I'm looking for recommendations for the future.

The house is so empty without the nutter so will be looking to get a new furry friend asap, but this time I think I would like to insure against the exorbitant vet fees that I was happy to pay to try and save him.

Any recommendations or help greatfully received.

Jon

RIP Cato

I personally think feed the best food, and what will be will be.

I'm amazed by the number of people who'll quite happily drop £100+ a month on pet 'insurance', then feed it the cheapest sttiest food.

But my cat only liked crap food. Cream in his bowl would be ignored and he'd be drinking the black water running down the gutter as I washed the car. Lean chicken would sit uneaten whilst he scavenged for bits of st dropping off the bird table.

Stupid, leg weaving wker. Do miss the daft tt though.

My view on pet insurance - indeed any optional insurance - is that if you have funds to cover the likely mishap, then all things being equal you are better off self-insuring. In other words, don't send money to keep people in offices, but pay the bill yourself, or if you don't have a few K on deposit then set a sum aside each month as a kitty (see what I did there!)

Boring stuff aside, enjoy your new pal biggrin

Thanks all, I've looked back at previous vet costs and decided to self insure. smile

Simpo thank you yes I'm sure we'll enjoy our new kitty, pick her up Monday and her name will be Ritika - Bengali for joy.

Whilst she looks a bit tragic in this photo she really is a bundle of joy smile

I would think Insurance for geriatric cats would be either massively expensive, or just not offered.

So you might not have been better off anyway.

Some friends were recently quoted £1k for their renewal premium for a 5 yr old dog. Our Vet tells us that some of her clients are paying £150/month.

Our 2 British Shorthair Cats who are indoor Cats have never been insured. There have been a couple of big Vet bills over their 15 yr life but we reckon we are still well in pocket for not having insurance.

Our Petplan cover came "free" with his first health check and then, unknown to me, as we've had multiple cats before and never had insurance, my wife renewed it. Think it something like £100 ish, then increased a bit (but not much) in years two and three. Cover limit was £4000.

Turned out he had a congenital heart defect which became apparent when he was 2. The vet threw everything at him - who knew there are cat cardiologists? Managed to spend exactly £4000 when he was two, then £4000 again when he was three. Then he died - vet told us that was always going to happen as they can't do much and the drugs become ineffective.

I can't remember why, but we did get a couple of cheques and they wouldn't bank through the phone app - I did wonder if that was just unlucky or done on purpose hoping you wouldn't bank them. However mostly the bills went direct to Petplan and they paid them without query.
