As the sole parent to a 10 year old girl I find myself under a constant barrage of the latest fashion trends, one which is recurring though is ear piercing.

I've tried putting her off again and again but for some reason all my distraction techniques have started to fail and the constant begging for earings is getting beyond my threshold for turning a deaf ear.

So PH dads, what age is the correct age to get their ears done, is it even a thing these days?

Anything on a toddler makes them look like a traveller, I know* that much. Keen to see the general consensus though as I'll have to cross this bridge with my two girls in about ten years.

  • Must admit... had my own left ear pierced when I was about 5-6 at my own request. Idiot. Pack of polos to crunch and stop me screaming the house down as my cousin poked some sort of needle through the lobe!

I’ve got similar from my 7y.o. We’ve consistently said when she’s 11 she can have them done. A couple of her friends parents have said the same which makes it easier when several others in her class have them pierced already.

Our daughter had hers done this summer at ten years old. She still has the surgical studs in at the moment, I'll have to figure out how to get them out at some point!

As you look to the fun filled future of parent/daughter dramas you'll look back at the ear piercing crisis of '24 with fond memories.

My ex had hers done in her 30s after finally rebelling against her mum who point black wouldn't let her get them done as a kid!

Divorced Da

Been trying to dissuade for a while too… since she was 9

Capitulated / discovered ex-wife capitulated this summer, and she’s 11yrs old

I’d rather she waited but tbh peer pressure and following the herd at their age is monumental

I must have one of the few 14 year old girls in the country who hates the idea of piercing her ears.

My daughter just had them done at 11. She tried a couple of years ago but freaked out massively. I've no issue with it.

Dad of 2 girls here both of mine have pierced ears, I think the eldest was 8 and the youngest got hers done at 6, I wasn’t overly keen on it but the wife convinced me.

In fairness both have been fine with having it done and no issues since with either.

With my eldest we went to the usual Claire’s accessories on every high street, with the youngest we went to a proper piercing shop and I definately recommend the latter.

Daughter had hers done at 7

She wanted them done from being 4/5ish and said if she still felt so strongly at 7 then she could, the desire never relented.

She had them done the week before christmas that year before heading off on holiday as normal and there were zero issues or problems - didnt use Claires like most - but instead used the piercer who her mum had used a few times before with zero issues herself.

She wasnt the first girl in her class as some had been done from being babies etc. but I think they all have them done now pre-starting Y5 (so by the time they were all 9) this September.

My 11 year old doesn’t want them. Or makeup. Or any social media… and seems to have a group of friends that are happier drawing, doing craft and chatting than anything else. So okay for now…

Mine was 7/8

Not sure why you’d push back on the idea of a daughter having her ears pierced.

For one thing it makes buying birthday and Christmas presents easier smile

Personally I think primary school age should be preserved as a time of relative innocence. No mobile phones (at least until Y6 when they might be walking home alone), no social media, no fake tans, no ears pierced, no dyed hair, etc. They have a lifetime ahead for that stuff. Maybe I'm a dinosaur.

I’m ambivalent about piercings as long as there’s only a few. My two girls are now 17 and almost-15. Both had their ears pieced when they were 10, and then a second time when they were each 12 or so. The younger had her nose done just before her 14th birthday. Also both wanted their navels done but neither have the right amount of skin in the right place for that.

The first ear piercings are largely an irreverence in the scheme of what else can happen…biggrin

My ex gf is Italian so there’s a whole massive extended family and lots of children. From what I could see they’re basically fired from the womb and get their ears pierced before the umbilical cord is cut.
