Might add another mini to keep the existing one company, looking at a 2014 One D on 86K with no real documented history so assuming the worst.

Any suggestion how much for a new chain if it sounds like a tank when I try it?

Decent job is around £1500, might as well do the clutch while you are in there

I had mine done in July as the clutch was slipping.

Ended up being £3k or so for clutch, flywheel, chains & powerflex wishbone/ARB bushes.

Basically have to keep it forever now.

Just for giggles I thought I would see how much to get the timing chain & clutch changed at a few specialists locally, in case I get bored looking at the Clubvan and just want to use it. Nearest Mini specialist to me is £1460 plus clutch, another local specialist wants to do the valve seals as part of the job (didn't ask for that) so their price comes in at £3600 !!

So, having now bought it rofl I just need to hope its been done.

Its on 86K and certainly sounds fine, barely tell its a diesel on tick over. Oil level good but service is way, way over due so complete oil and fluids change this weekend coming up. Up to 54K had regular changes and full mini service history. Just a gap of 30K with little to go on until 6 months ago.

Had new discs, pads, aux belt, glowplugs etc (about 1500 quids worth of stuff and an indie) about 4000 miles ago.

Kind of trying to convince myself its either had it done or "it will be fine" spin

Will start another thread for the only issue I can find.

No egg sucking intended, but If you do regular oil and filter changes during your ownership it should help to prolong the life of the timing chain and other engine components. Long life service intervals don't do cars any favours and are a false economy for the owners later in the car's life.

Well.... given the contents of the air filter I just changed... laugh

If it goes pop I've got another car to fall back on, this is to use for local trips, less than 6K miles a year.

Please get the chain/clutch done at same time and asap.
I had a 12 plated car
Higher miles than most (168k) with full BMW/Mini service history as required so about every 9/10 months owing to the use of the car. no expense spared when anything required doing... it got done.
The timing chain went on it sounding a little rough, but i thought it was because it was cold, but engine soon warmed up and sounded fine.
However the next morning refused to start
the chain had gone.
a car that was in great condition was now a write off. I got £350 scrap for it!
Had I known that the timing chains were useless I would have had it changed many many miles before it went.
The guy that picked the car up said he had had loads of Mini's with same problem, and said I had done well to get the miles out of it I had. He claimed the worse case he had seen was on a car that had done only 40k
Definitely worth spending £1400+ if you want to avoid spending around £7 to 7.7k on a new engine!

Did an oil and filter change yesterday, the old stuff was typical tar. Today I did a 100+ mile run and it really does run rather nicely returning 72mpg and (after the oil change) is noticeably quieter than it was, borderline same as my petrol ONE.

Is there a reasonably simple way to check if the chain has been done? I get the feeling the clutch has been done. The biting point is very low, maybe 20% upward pedal and it engages with no slip etc.

Again, trying to convince myself but 1500 quid+ is half what I paid for it so although financially it might be worth it, its not worth the hassle.

Unless it rattles or the flywheel rattles don’t bother, just change the oil regularly and don’t use start stop.

It’s easier to pull the engine out on a Mini, I’ve just given a ball park figure to a 520d and that was £1800 using genuine bits including auto box oil. That was all the chains, tensioners, gaskets oil, injector seals etc.

rubbish my 186k miles Mini had start/stop on all the time, used as a learner car, never had any problems with it. Start/stopped more than most owing to it's job

As for my chain going there was no warning at all, just sounded rough/cold for a mile or so.... then the following morning "went"

If intending to keep it...get it done
