Maybe moving to south leatherhead. Can see north leatherhead is a dump, we wanted to move to fetcham or Bookham but have settled for a house in Leatherhead, area seems nice. Private estate (with through access) seems very quiet. Surrounding areas seem good enough, nice middle class suburbia.

Don't care for the town centre really. I read there's nothing to do, well that's fine.

Deprivation maps show the area as ranking 6th, fetcham for example as being 1st (least deprived). So wanting to make sure a very expensive purchase isn't going to be a mistake.

Is it regarded as a sthole?

I don't live in Leatherhead, closer to Epsom although more than 15 years ago my kids went to school in Leatherhead. Both had good foundations which enabled them to do well and go onto further education and decent j
It is and always has been a very mixed area. I assume South area refers to Highlands Road and surrounding area which is probably the best. There is a development plan/ for the Town centre and new housing around the area. All Councils in Surrey seem to be having the same idea to make each town special and bring people into the town...what ever that really means ? You should be able to find the development plan on Mole Valley Council Web site.. Think it's called Transform Leatherhead and may have it's own website.
Ashtead and it's village of Bookham are the better areas outside Leatherhead and if you research I think you will find the schools tend to get better. Hope that helps

Wife and I moved to Fetcham in 1991. Bought a house on a smallish new development. We are still there with no plans top move..that tells you something!

Great location for:

  • countryside and NT etc properties
  • Gatwick and Heathrow, equidistant almost
  • the coast
  • commuting or day trips to London
  • access to M25
  • good schools so I am told
  • nice small towns eg Cobham,
  • Guildford good for main shopping, and has a Park and Ride, Bluewater only 40 minutes away if needed.
Not so good:

  • house prices
  • shortage of good pubs unless you are prepared to drive
  • ditto restaurants
Ask if you need more details.

BTW, I agree with your summary of North Leatherhead.
