Went to change oil for the first time on my own in my 97 Chim, have always had it done by someone previously, even with a lift.
Drained all 7 quarts and checked magnetic plug and found it clean!
Had researched filters in the past and purchased several K&N HP2004 filters.
Oiled the gasket and poured a small amount of oil into the filter, reached in to screw on filter and it fouled on a chassis tube!
Off to computer to find dimensions!
K&N is about 4” long and Fram equivalent shorter so of course this is the answer! Wrong, did not clear the frame either!
Last filter on the car found to be a very small Mann that fit but not sure correct?
Back to computer and found K&N made an SO2004, SO for spin on, according to website! Dimensionally much shorter overall! Ordered 2 and easy fit, lesson learned!

Mann 930/20 is the filter most use, there are some equivalents listed here somewhere though.

Do a visual check of your engine and gearbox mounts.
If the engine mounts sag even a few mm getting a standard oil filter on can be difficult.
Jack the car off the floor! turn your steering to full lock then look through wheel arches and your exhaust manifolds should show a good 10 mm clearance to the top chassis rails.
If it’s less there’s a possibility the engine mounts are sagging.
You can try loosening the mounts and lifting the engine then nipping them back up which can improve that clearance but if you see tears or compression in the rubber caused by heat it’s a good idea to replace them at some time.
Sometimes just blipping the throttle can show the engine rocking very slightly which is a sure give away the mounts are tired but don’t rely on that. Check the mounts and manifolds visually.

The original LandRover part no. is ERR3340. You should be able to cross reference from that.

Do you have an oil cooler fitted? On mine the sandwich plate means it needs a shorter filter.

Mann W 916/1 fits.

I recommend the Royal Purple 20-253 - Extended Life Oil Filter

Synthetic media oil filters are worth the extra in my opinion

I used to use the CumminsFleetguard manufactered oil filters that David Brown had made specially, but sadly I have not been able to contact him since Covid

A "no brainer" if TVRdetroit is Stateside and not paying the high import costs we have to to buy them in the UK.

Hi. I was under the impression that serpentine engines have the shorter filters and the pre-serps have the longer one due to oil pump configuration. Is the fouling due to the wrong filter fitted? Your Chimaera is the same age as my Griffith so it should have the shorter filter.

It's like the great oil debate, people will recommend what they use.
I'm too tight to pay for the likes of K&N and I doubt they would be any better than a premium brand changed regularly.
Some of these problems don't really exist.

Bit more info. Pre-serp filter, part No E0062, 5 and a half inch long. Serpentine filter, part No E2117, 4 inch long. You can fit a Serpentine filter to a Pre-serp but not the other way round due to fouling.

I also purchased a Royal Purple 20-253 filter based on the comments. It is the same size as the K&N PS2004 and does not fit.
Car is a 97 serp drive and has the shorter filter, possibly after 77K kms, the mounts have softened some, but filters other than the SO2004 don't fit my car, one of the hand built features??
Ready for next driving season!

k&NSO2004 do not fit on my car.
Now prepared for the first change next year! Sad day when ssscover goes on and insurance goes off here in the north country
