I had a BMW recall letter for my 420d about 2 years ago. It was to do with some coil inside or near the exhaust which was feared to be overheating and was liable to catch fire. At the time I could sense a lot of heat and smell burning from under the car. This only happened sometimes.
I took the car to a BMW dealer and they supposedly did something.
But 1 year the down the line I started to smell again and now it has got worse. I feel a lot of heat from under the car (near driver door) but again it only happens sometimes.
Anyone know about this issue? Did the manufacturer fix really fix it?

The recall was for the EGR cooler.

What you ar likely smelling is a very hot exhaust if the car is doing/just done a DPF regen.

Thanks SteBrown91.

"doing/just done a DPF regen."

What does this mean? I am not very technical.

All modern diesels have a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). This captures the harmful diesel particulates (soot etc) and stores it in the filter in the exhaust.

This needs to be cleared from time to time so the car starts overfuelling the engine and increases the revs at idle if not running at a decent speed to get the filter really hot, so the particulates are turned into a fine ash which can pass through the filter and out of the exhaust.

You will notice if its doing one when you come to a stop the car will be feel noticably warmer around the engine bay compared to normal and often the cars fans will kick in to try and cool everything down again.

The recall was for the EGR cooler as stated above - but many of the recalled cars are now subject of a second recall to replace the EGR cooler again.

BMW UK have introduced a system where dealers can do a check on the EGR cooler free of charge if you have any doubts
