New tyres time for the rear of the family bus. It weighs just over 1800kg and putting just over 400bhp through the rear wheels only via 6sp TC auto. I’ve had it 4 years and it came with PS4 all round which have been replaced by PS5 as they came to market

I’m generally happy with the overall performance of the PS5, comfortable and progressive, but are they worth 2x the price of something like Kuhmo Ecsta, or a 30% uplift on something like Continental ContactSport 6/7

Tyre size is 245/40R19

No, it’s not getting tracked, it’s a comfort-oriented car, but generally has a hard life and if you’ve got 400bhp, why not use it biggrin

Just after other people’s views - what else are we happy with?

I find £ to miles equals out. Whilst michelins are more expensive they last longer.

I’d be putting cross climates on a family run around. Better for 3/4 of the year where its damp, wet or cold.
The ps5 is a sports tyre.

I prefer the Goodyear eagle f1 asymmetric due to the stiffer sidewall and better wet wether performance but on a family car who cares about more steering feel.

As per Sams comment, the Conti wears a lot quicker, so chances are any cost saving will even out in wear time.

More than enough tests on Jon's Tyre Reviews to make a judgement on that for yourself.

Also factor in Michelin's also seem to fair better than most in terms of wear.

400hp isn't a huge amount these days, but as the tests do show, "good" tyres, are quite considerably better in almsot, all tests than some of the lesser tyres.

The C7's come out very good in most tests too. Doubt you'd go wrong with them either.

Of course, equally important, or more important is the environment you'll mostly be driving ? hot ? cold ? wet ? snow ? etc etc

PB is in Oz, so that isn't something he has to worry about.

I had Conti Sportcontact 7's on my Jag XFS, 380bhp rwd. I didn't like them, wasn't that they were bad, but really didn't instil me with confidence when pushing the big girl along.
But they do constantly get good reviews so who knows? I wouldn't fit them again though.

For balance I have the Conti SC7's on my Porsche. I really like them. Buckets of grip in both wet and dry conditions, comfortable enough and quiet too. I don't do mega miles though so wear didn't matter as much. They were about £200 / set cheaper than the PS4S equivalents

Thanks all for the responses. Whilst 400bhp isn’t that much any more, 245 isn’t a wide tyre either. And although it’s a family bus it is quite good fun to punt along so something progressive and predictable is always good. And that’s where the PS4/5 have been worthwhile.

…echoes my experience of SC5 on my previous Subaru - a change to PS4 was an instantly noticeable improvement. And I’ve got SC6 on my 968 (it came with them) and I’m not smitten. So might skip the SC7 too.

Anything from Pirrelli or Yokohama or Bridgestone? I’m not wedded to Michelin, it’s just they’ve provided what I want, consistently - but I’ve no probs with trying something else, other than Contis…

The SC7 has moved the game on. Don’t just believe a bit of personal anecdotal. Check out multiple official independent tests. The SC7 consistently wins. Check here:

I’d forgotten about that website - thanks, just disappeared down the Review Rabbithole for a couple of hours! Lots of good info, with the summary being the SC7 is v good, the PS5 last the longest and there’s little to choose between those two and the F1A6.

Let’s check some prices and availability…

It's worth bearing in mind though, that most of the reviews on that site are conducted with a FWD Golf so experience of the tyres may be completely different on a heavy RWD car in a different profile.

The tests have used a variety of RWD, FWD and AWD cars of mixed power outputs.

That's certainly the findings in the real world on the M140i and M2 groups. However wear is a big factor on the SC7.

It'll be cheaper than the MPS5 but probably proportionally so relative to wear.

I'm personally not a fan of different brands on the rears and fronts. As you're only replacing the rears that would be a factor for me also.

Interesting, just pondering the same on my E350. Gets used fairly spiritedly on winding, crappy country roads.

Costco currently have deal on MPS5… this will work out £480 for a set of 4 18 inch tyres fitted which seems a good deal, however fronts don’t need changing immediately.

Are these over-specced for a 15 year old 230hp shed? I just can’t see much of a price differential with other brands, other than budgets, which I definitely don’t trust. Current set of Michelin 5s have lasted markedly longer than previous 4s though!

Wow - that’s approx 65% of the best price I can get locally, albeit I’m after R19

I’m looking at equivalent to about £360 a pair, fitted.

SC7 are in short supply everywhere, but priced around £330/pair and the only F1A6 I can can find are more than the PS5.

I’ve got about 4-6 weeks tread left, so hoping there’s some pre-Christmas tyre bargains to be found!

As above tyre reviews website and YouTube are excellent. PS5 replaced SportContact 6 on my 365 bhp rwd car and there was a noticeable difference in noise and wet grip. Approx 20k miles later and they’re still around 4mm iirc but that’s mostly motorway miles. SC7 is supposed to be considerably better than the 6 but the Michelins look SEXY!
