Dammit, the thread moved while I was typing biggrin

What is the glide ratio of a plane under water?
The problem would be maintaining the correct angle. An aircrafts center of lift will be at a different point from it's center of buoyancy so it would likely be unstable. The wings have a positive angle of attack, so if it sank in a perfectly horizontal position it would actually go backwards.

Underwater gliders are a thing though, they use variable buoyancy to sink and rise, and then hydrofoils give them forward movement from that vertical movement. This means they can have a vey long endurance for a very small amount of power. They're used a lot of monitoring sea conditions, like salinity and temperatures and can stay at sea for months at a time.

And if the glider falls(sinks) onto a moving conveyer belt, has it really landed? biglaugh

Why is it that sometimes I click on posts in 'my stuff' and it takes me where I was before with a linebreak to show. Other times it ignores that and goes to the top of the page so you have to scroll down and figure out where you last were. There seems very little commonality to when this happens...

When it goes to the top of a page it's because a new page has been started, but your last read post is on what is now the penultimate page.

I had thought that previously but it's not that straightforward. Just looked at a thread I read earlier today, it's on the same page but dumps me to the latest post rather than where I last was.... Others do though confused

Ever since I joined PH back in 2001 I have had the threads display in descending order (ie. newest first). That way new posts are always on the first page. It probably looks a bit odd to most people but I've kind of got used to it and it works for me.

But, yes, I agree that it seems fairly random whether or not you get the bar that tells you were you were up to last time. On the rare times that it shows up I actually find it a bit of an annoyance.

The horse thing is very interesting, the preteen pony phase, happy to literally shovel st in order to care for and ride a horse.
As for the sexual thang, it has been mooted that victorian ladies got a bit hot and bothered when in charge of a pony and trap gazing upon the steam rising for the shiny, muscular hindquarters of a chestnut gelding.

Likewise I have newest at the top.
The red bar works all the time but only until you refresh something or post, when it resets to the current post. I therefore open any threads which interest me in new tabs all at the same time (so the red bar is at the last time I looked at PH). However it can take many minutes to read these, so I can end up posting a reply only to find that someone else has posted the same thing half an hour before.

It seems to me that if the last post you've read is the last one on the page, the "new" button dumps you at the top of that page rather than the start of the next page, which is where the first unread post is. I don't think it should work like that, but I know now that if I'm at the top of a page, that's probably why.

Yeah that does happen. But I'm referring to the seemingly random nature of where it drops me in a post that's midway through its pagination. Sometimes it takes me to where I was, other times it dumps me at the top and I have to figure out what I've already read or not. Key word being sometimes - other than posts reaching end of page it seems utterly random as to whether or not it will drop me where I last was (what I want it to do, and it seems the most logical way)....

I use the Mapway Ltd TFL Tube Map app, works ok if you can live with the occasional advert.

Why do you need an app? Just download the TFL tube map to your phone and look at it as required!

If you need to get somewhere I find looking on Citymapper works well https://citymapper.com/?lang=en

As an example I need to get to Kings Cross tomorrow. Tell it where you are starting from and the destination and it suggests different routes, saves faffing around with the tube map.

I used to use one called "Tube Map", but got sick of the pop up adverts.

Citimapper, and even Google maps work pretty well for planning journeys, but these days, I seem to have settled on using the official "TfL Go" app.

I have seen posts where people put certain phrases into a curious mixture of upper and lower case letters. I have no idea what this is supposed to signify. Can anyone enlighten me?

TeH youF

Youngsters.

I am guessing. I very much doubt there has been a resurgence in 90's l337 h4x0rr spk

It's a mark of getting older that we cease to understand what the fk youngers are on about. We used to be with it. But then they changed what "it" was.

*hugs*

Generally it's to imply whatever or whoever the poster dislikes/disagrees with is not rational, ignorant or is arguing in bad faith.

An example would be someone claiming that Ruritania's imposition of tariffs on Lilliputian imports is unfair, opposed by another suggesting that Lilliputian trading standards mean Ruritanian imports are subject to non-tariff barriers and that these are equivalent. The first person might then reasonably claim the second is playing the 'both sides are the same' card, often presented as "bUt BOtH SiDeS!".
