I always liked this one of Alvin Stardust (aka Shane Fenton aka Bernard Jewry) on the side of this house in 1974 in Heywood Lancashire.

One of Walter Kershaw's?

There were a good few of his in the Bury/Rochdale areas around that time, brightened the place up a bit. smile

I have always wondered how Murals come about.

Does someone knock on your door and ask if they can paint Bob Marley with a big spliff on the side of your house, or do you come home from a day at work to find it painted on. Or do you commission it yourself..I guess that is the most likely scenario.

Do you need planning permission? Do you ask your neighbours if it is a good idea?

Northern Ireland as a kid always fascinated me

Did the owners just have to accept it was happening, or were they the ones doing it?

I think if they weren’t the ones doing it they would probably just accept it….

A few where I used to live.

The big splash one of the best I’ve ever seen tbh. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brixton_murals

Theres a lot of murals being painted in my area. Mainly around the town.

Question I have is who maintains them? Buildings change ownership, peoples interests change.

These things arent cheap.

It's on the side of a bar and not a house, but there is the Derry Girls mural in Belfast.

Although the bar owner has covered the bottom half of it now with an awning cover for outside seating...

Ferry Road, Edinburgh. It's been there for years but no idea on the history.
