I note that this gentleman, the worlds strongest man, died yesterday aged just 75.
In 1975 I was stationed at RAF Wittering, Geoff was the local village bobby and I would often see him around the village.
At the time, this road could be accessed from the northbound A1,

I was returning to base one evening when I came across Geoff's panda car, blue light flashing, protecting a lorry that had turned right. under the side of the lorry was buried a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow...this was long before 'under run' barriers were fitted.. I pulled around the lorry to the south side and looked for Geoff and found him throwing up in the ditch. He recognised me and told me to bugger off...' Do not go near that, lad, it's 'orrible'
The driver's head was on the rear parcel shelf of the RR.
Just one of the many things that the village bobby had to deal with
RIP, my old friend.

I remember watching him on WSM back in the day. Its surprising how "small" he looks now compared the absolute units that compete now.
He was big by normal man standards. He wasnt as big as some in his era, but was a very good, strong!, all-round athlete including quite a fast runner.

Not that old these days 75, another name from our childhoods gone, always assumed he would be older than that to be honest.
Anyone remember this ?

At that time Geoff was shot putting at Olympic level, the local butcher sponsored him with steak!
Lovely guy to have a natter with, knew most people on his patch and give a wave when driving or a greeting if on foot.
