We are three couples looking at a four night stay in Yorkshire in May 2025. We are looking for a 4 Star Country House type hotel in Yorkshire. We will be touring around Yorkshire from our base so somewhere near to the North York Moors would be ideal.

We did a similar tour about ten years ago and stayed at The Feversham Arms.

Are there any local recommendations of hotels to consider?

Thank you.

Swinton Estate

Lovely spa. We ate/drank in the more casual Terrace Bar/Restaurant (staff in jeans/white blouses etc) and it was amazing. Fantastic cocktails too.

They have lots of bolt on activities (I highly recommend the Chef's table which you can book privately). You can also shoot/fish there if that's your thing.

Their 'packages' usually offer the best value: https://www.swintonestate.com/packages/

The hotel is well placed for NY Moors, although better placed for the Dales which IMHO are far nicer smile (with much better driving!). It is a huge and well moneyed estate with a lot of history, but has been modernised tastefully and well. Very professionally run and nothing is too much trouble.

The Star Inn

Next to Helmsley so great if you want to go back there. Michelin star and nice separate accommodation in a lovely village. It's a lovely stay, but lacks spa and isn't a country hotel, rather a series of buildings spread through the village.

Rockliffe Hall

My local (my son works there), very nice country house hotel, spa & golf. It's lovely but the location might not be Yorkshire enough for you. That said it's more convenient for Whitby/Staithes etc if that's what you're after.

You’ve got a lot to choose from but here’s a few we’ve had good experiences at in recent years.
East Coast:

Wrea Head Hotel…Scarborough
Dunsley Hall…Whitby
North Star Hotel…Flamborough

The Dales:

Coniston Cold

York:

Middlethorpe Hall

There’s also Grantley Hall in The Dales if you’ve just won the lottery (we’ve been to a daytime car event there)
And The Saltmoore on the northern Whitby outskirts(no experience personally)

Swindon Park at Masham, Grantley Hall at Ripon (if money no object) or Rudding Park at Harrogate.

That's the Swinton Estate at Masham I mentioned above smile

I forgot to say that obviously the best beer in the world is brewed in Masham and you can take a tour of their brewery!

Weetwood Hall or Oulton Hall in Leeds? Although haven’t visited either lately.

A massive thank you to all of you for making these recommendations and sharing your experiences. It was just what I was hoping for.

I will do my research and let you know where we end up booking to stay.

If you want Morrs as opposed to Dales, then Egton Manor is well positioned too.
Masham, Ripon and Harrogate are all on the far side of the A1 for the NY Moors

That’s a good call, we’ve no personal experience but I’ve heard good reports from clients who’ve stayed there. Our daughter’s been to a couple of spa days there. I expect it’ll be pricey.

Rudding Park good shout, went to a wedding there, was really nice, plus right on a golf course as well if that is your thing, the Mrs been to a couple of Spas there.
Not the same standard as Rudding Park but Falcon Manor in Settle is a nice place, close to the 3 peaks, a short drive to Horton in Ribblesdale, Ribblehead viaduct and one of the best driving roads to over to Hawes. Settle a lovely base, lots of nice surrounding villages and country pubs/walks such as Austwick, Kirby Lonsdale, Malham or 30 minute drive to Skipton in the other direction.

Rudding Park at Harrogate (very nice Spa)

Coniston Cold

The Star Inn OR The Pheasant in Harome. Latter has a pool. Both excellent accomodation and food.
