I love black pudding (marmite to some )but having tried countless rings etc from various butchers and supermarkets I, I have still not found any that match up to puddings of years ago .
Modern day puddings are blended into what seems to be a black pudding pate , with no discernible pieces of fat and oats .
The best I have found so far , was from a butcher in the town of Cheddar , sourced from the highland isles , it was spicy , peppery and had a texture of the oats and other ingredients.
Any recommendations ? not too far from the SE , or on line

Love black pudding but getting stuff worth eating is not easy. Pretty much given up on it these days as I have not found a supplier to supply anything but mass produced stuff. Admittedly I have not tried for a while.

In my experience here in Scotland the stuff from Stornoway is regarded by many as being the gold standard. I like it, it has more oats in than others I think. I often ask local butchers if they make their own and try them if they do, but the Stornoway one is my favourite.

I am off to Spain next month and looking forward to tucking into the Morcilla again.

Doreen's.

Mind you, never had it until I moved to N Yorkshire, think you can order it online. It's not overwhelmed with oats, but I like the chunks of lard as I 'dry' fry it and let the fat render out to crisp the outside.

I use it a lot - fried with caramelised apples as a starter. Scallops and black pudding is a cliché for a reason. I really like a baguette with caramelised onions black pudding rings and brown sauce as a healthy snack.

Many years ago, I used to go to a butcher in Stourbridge who made black pudding in the back of the shop - instead of chunks of lard he used bacon rinds lick

In Crieff on a shooting trip went to the chippy thought I'd get a deep fried pizza for the LOLs. They had deep fried black pudding - no competition cloud9

Although they're based on the local indusrtial estate, I'm fairly sure that "Doreen" lives about 100yds away from us. smile I'm ashamed to admit that I've never tried it.

Lucky boy! Don't feel too bad about never trying it, I probably consume enough annually for 5/6 'normal' adults.

Black pudding is actually my favourite food but it has to be Chadwicks black pudding of Bury market iv;e eaten this since i was a kid and still love today it hasn't changed at all, it has nice lumps of fat and just the right amount of oats and herbs , it's a true delicacy fit for kings. I have found another truly outstanding version whilst i spend a lot of time in Northern Ireland made by hanning's meats of Moira another old school mouth watering treat, out of the super market offerings i like marks and spencers the most but it's way off the above.

how do you like to eat your's for me it's gently simmered in water , cut in half eaten out of the skin with tomato sauce and a sprinkle of salt = pure heaven.

I think we have a winner!

I detest black pudding. The lumps of fat in it make me heave.

I've not a British black pudding that's anywhere near as good as Spanish morcilla de burgos. Find a Spanish deli or a good online retailer and sample a few different ones. Absolutely delicious.

You can get it on Amazon, so easy to give it a try.

If I’d have read this before lunch you could have had a photo of a black pudding and bacon sandwich… the contents of which were made by my local butcher. Second one this week as the bds had the puddings already packed in pairs. smile

As for marmite… nope.

My experience is that proper black pudding is easily available in Lancashire, and like hen's teeth down south.

This is what proper black pudding looks like to me. And it is best served poached in its skin, then skinned and eaten on a buttered ovenbottom muffin with salt, pepper, and English mustard. Not sliced and fried.
