E39 brakes, what’s recommended?
Discussion
I need to replace the brakes on my e39 523i but what’s recommended please?
Ideally an upgrade but as near OE as possible.
Whenever I’ve needed to replace items I’ve always upgraded. Suspension is all polibushed with
Motorsport anti roll bars, eibach springs etc. Alloys 8” wide OE split rims, etc. Car is pretty immaculate.

ATE blank discs or ATE Power Discs with ATE Ceramic pads via Autodoc - all superb discs & padsIdeally an upgrade but as near OE as possible.

ATE are OEM too
They're what I ran on my E39s with zero issues and superb braking
Fit HEL braided lines too (inc the 2 lines from the ABS pump) and refresh the fluid
Genuine if you want an do it once, easy life.
If you use aftermarket ones, I strongly recommend getting rid of the coating off the disc face before driving it as it's applied way too thick on some brands.
The coating was so thick on my 370mm ATEs, it overheated discs during bed in and warped them. You can see the excess paint clumping on the edges of the pad below.

This is for an E39; brakes are much more simple and the ATE ones recommended will be faultless - single piece simpleness etcIf you use aftermarket ones, I strongly recommend getting rid of the coating off the disc face before driving it as it's applied way too thick on some brands.
