Best place to advertise MK1 1.8
Discussion
My father has a 1996 MK1 that he has owned for the past 22 years but unfortunately has reached the age where getting in and out of the car is a stretch for him. I’ve offered to help him sell the car but not really up to speed on the MX5 scene, any suggestions on best place to advertise? Is there much demand for these so advertising on here as a national platform worth a try? Car is looking a bit tired with panels fading at different rates but has a 12 month MOT, hardtop and hasn’t been to the moon and back a few times so has some life in it for the right person.
There is a demand for good solid cars but they rust badly so not sure if your aware of that. They can look ok on the surface but its what lies underneath is the issue.
Usual places apply really. Here, facebook marketplace, mx5 owners forums, car and classic.
Prices vary wildly, a good solid original car that is tidy and needs no rot addressing is somewhere around £4000 but thats just a rough guideline.
They can go up to £10k for a minter but not many of those around.
If you could get an inspection done before sale it would help you price it but it may show up some things you dont like too.
Any reason you dont want to keep it as they are fantastic little cars, i may be interested myself if you wanted to pm me some details when your ready.

Hi Belle, thanks for the comprehensive reply and advice. I have a Boxster myself plus three other vehicles in the family and a son who will add another car in a year or so, those combined have put me off keeping it myself although the idea of a track car was considered. I’m semi aware of the rotting issues and know that he has had sills welded in recent years but the last mot had an advisory on seat belt mounting area.
I’m traveling with work at the moment, I’ll send you further details when I’m back home at the weekend.

Sounds like a usual place for the rot tbh but sadly once it's set it in needs attention.
So tricky to buy these cars, I bought a non runner described as rust free and on initial inspection it looked good.
Poked a sill with a screwdriver once home and a nice hole opened up so you need to be so careful.
I paid £900 for the car and spent a further £2000 on it but didn't cut any corners as I was intending to keep it.
Managed to sell for £3250 as I had a Lotus itch to scratch but kind of miss it really.
