A3 Spacesaver spare... will it fit in the Well?

Hi all,

A pal has a 68 reg A3, and had an un-repairable ( if that is a word !) puncture on his way back from a family holiday in the UK. And as his car only has that limited use can of goo in the car, he had to have the car recovered all the way home, which was most inconvenient.

Needless to say, the car has no spare....but it has the OEM sub woofer ( I assume that what is sitting in the wheel well under the carpet...! )

1) He wanted me to find out ( he is not a PH person) if the older space-saver spare wheel/jack kit etc would fit in the boot in place of the sub?

2) and my question would also be...if the sub is disconnected, would the car audio still work ?

I have seen quite a few 'kits' on the Bay of E, and my instinct is that all would be OK...

Just wondering if anyone has done this as I assume it is a fairly common issue.

On a similar-age Golf Mk7, the Dynaudio subwoofer fitted neatly into the spare wheel itself.

Probably a question for the more specilist audi forums, if it can be done someone will have a list of part numbers up.

As above on the golf mk7 as long as you had the larger 18” spacesaver it fitted around the subwoofer, as most golfs got a spare as standard. I’d imagine the sub for the a3 is essentially the same carcass if not the same entire unit so it should fit.

My wife bought a new S3 and specced the 18in spare wheel kit which went in as you say.

I have an A3 with the 18" space saver & factory sub within it. And the boot floor still works on both levels. (Yes the sound system does still work with it disconnected)
