Hi,

I had a PP account a couple of years ago for online auctions, but had to cancel it after they billed my card twice, causing all manner of trouble...

So anyway, I'm now exporting my UK-made widgets to all parts of the Globe and have been asked by a US-based dealer if I can take PP. Most of my dealers pay via bank-wire, but PP is cheaper and quicker, so I can see the attraction.

Can I do it with a Personal Account, or is there any point in establishing another type of PP account? I notice they charge credit-card type percentages on the professional accounts, and if I was that bothered I'd get an account with the bank credit-card dept.

Will a personal account handle it?

One of my initial issues with PP is that they give you so little info until you sign up - the FAQs strike me as pretty ambiguous / skeletal, and I found out last time I joined that you don't get the full terms and conditions until you've given them every piece of personal info...

I'm weary of signing up (put PayPal into Google and view the 2nd and 3rd hits...), but it seems increasingly tricky to survive without a PP account as their charges are lower than bank-transfers.

I don't think I'll use the PP account often - my motives are to appease my main NY dealer, who is an important client.

Thanks for any advice in advance

Flat16, it depends on the person sending you the money/ your sending the money too. If he/they are sound then there is no problems. the thing with paypal is they are all mighty, if they decide that your customer is right they just remove the money and give it back to them, no arguements, no court hearing nothing, if they complain about you then paypal can freeze you paypal account for 6 months to "investigate".

There are premier accounts ( I have one for ebay and internet sales ) they offer you and the buyer slightly more protection ( paypal are liable for a larger amountthan personal account but it is still small ).

best bet is to have your paypal account hooked up to a bank account that you do rarely use ( small current account ) and make sure you transfer out money asap, don't, leave it in there.

Payapl account are useful, its great until it goes wrong and then it is unbelievably shite.

Hope that helps

Thanks for the info!

Setting up a dedicated bank account is a lot of hassle to go through...

Something that's always struck me as strange about PP is that they have no obvious rival... If you add this to the fact that they undercut every other means of transferring money internationally charge-wise, factor in the competitiveness of the financial services sector, it adds up in my mind to a venture where they trade customer-service for mark-up, and no other financial institution is brave enough to compete knowing how stripped the organisation must be to compete...

I know there are plenty of satisfied PP users out there, it's just that after my experience a couple of years back I'm pretty nervous about establishing another account...
