Has anyone had much experience of European road trips in their EV?

I believe about 3 miles per kWh is about average (?) for mixed driving but what might that drop to if you wanted to go at a steady 85mph on the autoroute?

I don’t think UK driving has any relevance as I’ve never been able travel at a reasonable speed for hundreds of kms like you can in Europe.

For the sort of trips we do I’d like to be confident we could get about 275 miles at 85mph before having to recharge. I’m guessing this is beyond reach for now?

I think most Ev drivers simply don't drive that fast ...

We have a vary humble Kia eNiro which around town averages 4.4 miles per kWh ... at 65mph on the motorway with modest traffic we could just eek 300 miles out of the 64kWh battery ... also assuming that we could run the battery to almost nothing.

I am guessing this could be 200 miles at 85mph ??

P.S. This was with the heater set at 20C with an ambient temperature of 15C and no lights ... there are a lot of variables !

I was going 152mph on the Autobahn the other day in my Taycan GTS, no idea what my MPKW was, I didn’t really care smile

I do know my 100% charge indicate a range of about 180 miles or so……..

Does that help?

But that's at your average speed from the start of your journey ... what was that ?

Pulling a number out of my arse I'm going to go for 2.3ish in winter, 2.6 in summer.

I doubt 3 is achievable. I'd be getting more like 2.1/2.2 in my car.

I have a GTS ST (bigger wheels and tyres which hurt range)...best I've ever seen is around 3.1m/kWh.

Lifetime average for the car (22k miles) is 2.9.

I doubt you'll see over 3 at sustained high speed (in fact I'd bet on that), even from a J2. I reckon at 85mph I'd be around 2.

As we've mentioned on the ZEV mandate thread, though, do you really need it? They charge up quickly at fast chargers.

My lifetime is 2.1mi/kWh with an average speed of 34mph over 13k miles.

You are correct, having been through Europe a number of times the infrastructure is brilliant and the number of fast chargers is incredible, they really have this EV stuff sorted yes

My 4S on 20's has a lifetime average consumption of 3.5mi/kWh over 33,000 miles. I did Le Mans and back with a totally full car at 85mph on the French part, I think I was at around 2.8mi/kWh so should be good for around 220ish miles.

I have a 4S.
Averaged 3.3 mi/kwh over c.8,000 miles. That’s through winter and summer.
Motorway run in current weather I averaged 3.4mi/kwh but I basically drive at motorway speed limit.
I find worse consumption is for very brief trips driving to and from the train station for commute - more like 2-2.3, and can be sub 2 in very cold winter conditions.

My 4s CT does 3m / kHw on the motorway at a steady 70.
Brisk 5.5 mile country lane commute to work is more like 1.5 to 2. Down to 1 in the winter.
Overall, averaging low 2's.

Strangely seems to be a thing if you drive an EV. Maybe range is a real concern for everyone!?

Take your uk motorway range and remove about another 15%

I now know the answer to my own question.

In a gen 2 Taycan RWD ST (20 inch wheels & roof rails) with 2 people, some luggage and a 13kg dog we have achieved 2.8 miles pkwh at 138 kmph / 86 mph.

Usual mixed use is more like 3.5 miles pkwh.

It’s been a great car for the 1000km+ trip so far. Adaptive cruise stopped working due to the amount of bugs collected on the sensor and a fire at a charging station was a bit worrying but otherwise smooth sailing.

The thing to note is that air resistance increases in proportion to the square of speed and power required to overcome air resistance increases with the cube of speed. So if you double your speed, you need approx 8x the power.

So relatively small differences in motorway cruising speed will have a signficant impact on range.
