I maybe didn't agree with his politics but capability wise he was light years ahead of most current politicians and an intellectual colossus in comparison to the entire Scottish parliament we have today. RIP.

I don't have strong feelings either way about AS but it made me think if I die at 69 after having received my state pension for a year I'll be haunting someone for refund on my NI.

Made a lot of noise. Self interested populist who achieved next to nothing, except sowing division. Sorry, but there it is.

He was some politician. I didn't agree with almost anything he said but I have to tip my hat to the man.

I fundamentally disliked his politics and disagreed with most things he stood for, but I've always had a quiet admiration for the man.

Especially after the goings on of the last few years, which alas he shall not see brought to a just resolution.

Alex Salmond as a Politician was a Head and Shoulders above any British Politician since Margaret Thatcher and I invite anyone to name better in those intervening Years . Speaking as a Scot who has spent most of his life in England and shared none of his Nationalist aspirations I look at the nonentities past and present , the complete absence of any Political talent and I find it astounding .Salmond could both orate and more importantly like Thatcher he had conviction and that in my humble opinion is what's sorely missing in British Politics . In fact I would go as far to say that its been replaced by disingenuous opportunism .

One of the few conviction politicians. He was also untainted by ridiculous media-training that makes so many politicians irritating.

I didn't agree with his politics but I respected how effective he was. He never looked particularly healthy but 69 isn't old.

Allegedly he was opening a bottle of Tomato Ketchup at the time, which I think it quite fitting.

On the subject of fried Mars bars, I was walking past a Blue Lagoon Chippy the other day and deep fried Mars bar with ice cream was £6.50.
