Hi All;

Was involved in an altercation at a roundabout over the weekend. Won’t go into details as its an ongoing claim but wanted people’s opinions on the below.

2016 340i touring suffered front passenger door damage as well as bottom sill damage. Took car home and cleared up surrounding panels with T-cut to get a sense of if the front wing or rear passenger were damaged, thankfully all appears well.

Awaiting the assessor to come out and have a look but have heard many a horror story of cars being written off due to panel damage due to costs and time in getting parts.

Does anyone know;

a) Have people seen damage like this before and has similar cars written off?
b) What’s the best way for me to man maths up how much this would cost to repair if insurance does declare it a write off? I see doors on Ebay for £350-500 but appreciate they're many gubbings and coding which needs to be factored in

Currently kicking myself as car has been faultless over the last 3 x years and never missed a beat, kills me to think there's any chance of it being written off frown

New door, and the sill is just a plastic cover, so not major damage - would be surprised if the cost came to more than a few thousands, and with the age of the car you could even source a second hand door, if you don't want to go through insurance.

Definitely not being written off

I had similar damage to my old F31 (in silver actually) a few years ago, except it was just 2x doors and no other damage.

Was around £3400+vat for the work if I remember at Sytner BMW. 3rd party covered it all.

As long as the sill underneath has no damage i can't see it being a write off.

No coding needed for a used door swop. If there are any programmed modules in the door just swop them over (don’t think there are).

A good secondhand door in Titan silver, 200 quid or less. The locks, handles and window regulator are easy to swap over - for me that would be two hours work.

If your insurance company want to write it off, let them as long as you can keep the car for a small percentage. A new door is about £850 and about to fit, paint etc about a grand with VAT. Could be more as bodyshops know how to charge, especially insurance companies.

Here's a silver door for 130 quid:

That doesn't look like it would be beyond economic repair, but if the insurer reckons it is I'd definitely want to keep it.

I hope you get a decent outcome OP. thumbup

Had a claim last year. Assessor said, as soon as the sill is damaged, they class it as structural damage.

My car has plastic covers over the sill, which got cracked, the metal underneath was fine, but they wrote it off anyway. tts.
