I am after a recommendation for a MOT station in York, ideally somewhere that is used to testing modified cars. Any advice appreciated

I would recommend York MOT Centre in Hospital Fields Road.

They do MOTs only, nothing else.

Greenway Garage Ltd in Newton on Ouse MOT a number of classic cars and high end ones like McLaren and Ferrari and are classic car friendly. I do have to say that the MOT rules and test is very strict and it can be a problem when, for instance , a car fails to meet the emissions requirements.

A copy of this test has to be held on fine for inspection .

But the main thrust of the MOT test is safety, or, is the car safe for the road if you like, and no MOT testing station would mess with this.

You can call if you like a speak to stephen or colin. I must declare I have an interest in this business but to be fair, it is always busy so no further business is required so I am doing this to provide some help if possible.

I’ve been to both and would recommend both.
I mostly use Hospital Fields Road for cars as it’s closer - I’ve always found them very fair.
My AX has a modified exhaust system and they persisted with testing it until they could obtain a result (the backbox is a pain to get a probe in).

To give them credit, Halfords on Layerthorpe were so good last year with my modified van (really low, air ride etc) that I've just booked to take it back to them next week for its next MOT. Lass working in there had a very low static car and was dead helpful in getting the guys in the workshop to make sure it didn't foul the rollers etc.

On the other hand, place on Poppleton Road industrial estate (can't remember the name) made a right balls up of it - raised the air ride up so far it stretched brake lines and caused ARBs to hit things and failed it. Didn't test it at anywhere near drive height....
