MS Flight Sim 2024
Discussion
Surprised there isn't already a thread on this but release date for MSFS 2024 has been announced for November and you can pre-order now.
Numerous changes, looks to be one of the biggest revamps I can remember both to the physics and realism and the graphics. The whole world is modelled from photogrammetry where possible, and where it is not possible they've managed to model it from topographic and satellite data. Each airport and helipad has been added, and the whole world is streamed from the internet as you travel. Recommended graphics card is GFX 4080!!! Does look stunning though.
Prices start at £70, or $70, which feels a lot like we are being ripped off given as $70 is £52! For the top version expect to pay £200, or £150 if you can buy from the States.
Preview video here, there are many more on Youtube since they gave some early access copies out.

My internet is right at the bottom of the recommended streaming scale for this. I'll sample it on Game Pass but won't be surprised if it's unusable.
Photogrammetry barely works in the existing game, or it sort of does after a 20 second wait for it to load, so hopes are not high when it's the rest of it too.
I expect a lot of the freeware I use won't be updated for 2024 when it becomes clear how much extra work is needed.
2020 was the real game changer and it still has me marvelling every time I use it. I may well stick with that.

This is the only “game” I’ve played for years (well the previous version) and some use the potential hijack. Last time I subscribed to game pass(?) and could download various games inc FS. Anyway, I got tired of the ml that fee so killed it and have since installed. I can see I can but the game but I’m seeing “Xbox/PC” which appears to be cheaper than “PC” which makes no obvious sense to me. I just want to own the game for life, maybe buy extras, and get updates. What am I missing or misunderstanding? TIA

Presumably Xbox/ PC is a Microsoft store code. Doesn't really matter. It'll work. If it says PC only I assume that's a Steam key. CDKeys had it for less money in the runup to the launch and no one's reported any issues with the code so it might be worth checking that.
I thought the preload would be, y'know, a preload. It was all of 13 megabytes.
I'll give up on launching tonight and try in the next few days.

It’s CDKeys that I was looking at. I’m going to give it ago in the morning when the US are asleep and order the premium deluxe version CDKeys had it for less money in the runup to the launch and no one's reported any issues with the code so it might be worth checking that.

Hours at 0% at the loading screen. Gave up.
Now there's a queue to log in.
Pretty much what I expected. I'll assume this is a blip and will come back another day.
Same here. I got as far as Customise Identity then it froze. After retrying either 0% or the queue. I'll wait til tomorrow and likely another update Now there's a queue to log in.

Got in last night and today.
Hard to judge obviously as streaming is going to be bad for many more days, but overall it's an incremental upgrade to 2020 with certain things that are vastly better like ground textures and markings, but I expect the bandwidth problem will never fully go away so 2020 is good enough for me.
My internet is fundamentally rubbish so others may have a far better time of it when things are smoothed out.
Autogenerated buildings and airports don't seem any better. The models have a new LOD system that makes the different resolutions pop in and out much more noticeably.
You definitely know you're in a more polished world than 2020, but it's a bit like 1080p vs 4k, if you're absorbed you stop noticing so much.
BUT I wouldn't be surprised if 2024 starts to eat 2020's server lunch in which case I'm saddled with two games that are hobbled.
