Car insurance was due for renewal so went through usual route of price comparisons. found cheaper so taking a new policy out with another company, policy starts tomorrow all paid for etc.

Today this morning just had an accident. I've told my current insurer and they have recovered the car to the bodyshop. Do I also need to notify the new insurer aswell?

A pending claim will move the goalposts a bit - the new insurers may no longer be the cheapest.

Yes because your policy has yet to start and it is a material fact that if at some later date you have an issue on your new policy on, said claim may come to light and potentially spell a world of issues for you.

Your new insurer may not want to cover you.

Blimey.

I had similar 2 years ago - I'd already paid for my renewal (with my existing insurer) but had an accident just before it renewed.

My renewal went up by £12.10!

Happened to me once. Someone hit me less than a week before renewal. Hadn't been driving long enough to protect my NCD. Insurance doubled from my original renewal premium until the claim was settled in my favour, at which point my NCD was reinstated and the difference was refunded.

But you should be able to cancel at no cost if it hasn't come into force and can find a cheaper quote.
