Mercedes-AMG C63 (S205) | PH Auction Block

The best bang-for-your-buck used family car currently for sale? Discuss

Time waits for no man, or so they say, and nothing proves the point like a 2016 AMG C63 wagon. No, really. Back the launch of the 4.0-litre, ‘205 generation C63, there was much consternation among the dedicated AMG fans that this twin-turbocharged car would struggle to live up the reputation of its illustrious forebear, the 6.2-litre, ‘204 era of C63. There was much worthy protest about throttle response and sound and too much technology blighting the spirit of AMG ‘bahnstormers.

Now look. Less than a decade on and the equivalent C63 is 50 per cent more expensive with an engine half the size. It’s a long time ago but also, in the grand scheme of it, not ages. And while the original C63 will always appeal as a modern classic, there’s no escaping the fact that those cars launched 16 years ago; even if you’re lucky enough to nab a late one, it’s going to be 10 years old now and with plenty of much older architecture. Undoubtedly cool things, though maybe no longer the car to subject to the travails (and expense) of everyday use.

Which makes the 4.0-litre generation even more attractive, sufficiently new to be used all the time but old enough to boast the hot-v V8 without the complexity or weight of hybridisation. There wasn’t a bad one among the bunch; the coupe was the best to drive with its unique rear axle, the saloon holds considerable rarity appeal, and even the convertible wasn’t without its charms. The C63 estate, of course, did rollicking uber wagon better than anything else - an RS4 really wasn’t even close, truth be told - and a glorious example of the breed is going under the PH hammer early next month.

Even by the very standards of ‘205 C63 AMGs, this one stands out. As the estate to begin with, of course, but also as an early non-S model; it means 476hp instead of the flagship’s 510hp, however it gets a mechanical instead of electronic limited-slip diff, which is now regarded as a little less troublesome a few years down the line. Always nice to have one less thing to worry about with a secondhand fast car. Getting the 9-speed auto of the facelifted car (it launched with a seven-speeder) would be desirable, though with that update all C63s got the electronically controlled diff. Brilliant Blue Metallic looks ace, a welcome change from silver, white and black.

There’s plenty more in its favour, too, having covered just 45,000 miles with four owners since 2016 and with a service undertaken every single year. It’s been with the current keeper since 2021, during which time they’ve refurbed the wheels and had the paintwork regularly detailed. They clean the exhaust tips with metal polish, if you want to know something about the seller. The Michelin tyres are 5,000 miles old and, yes, the boot badges are gone. Plus 10 Q car points there.

Why wouldn’t you, right? This C63 is a great spec of a great AMG, has been doted on by its most recent owner, and ought to provide heaps of family fun for years to come. Despite the persistent rumours, cars like this (well, not exactly like it) aren’t coming back. Expect this one to prove very, very popular indeed. Perfect time, in fact, to remind you about the new ‘Make an Offer’ feature on PH, too, where bids can be submitted ahead of the auction going live to secure a car without the uncertainty of going down to the wire. If it meets the reserve and the seller is happy, then the deal is done - easy as that. The C63 goes live at 09:00 on October 6th, meaning you have until 48 hours beforehand to submit an offer. Best of luck!

I never understand why people slobber on blanket hating black wheels, no matter what they are on, when it is clearly vehicle and vehicle colour dependent (some car/colour combinations work better with black wheels, some with silver - you choose dependent on what combo works/compliments/matches best, just like whether brown or black shoes work better with a black or blue suit!!!), but in THIS configuration...... no, black wheels do NOT go with a blue car, and certainly don't work with this, as it is a gorgeous shade of blue and a bloody handsome beast otherwise.

Anyway, I guess you're gonna be looking at around £25k for this, which will be less than a third of that Beemer 550e estate above...... I certainly know which one I'd be throwing my money at!! wink

Great colour scheme and it has the sensible seats and reliable diff. No gpf, rwd, and a decent boot.
Yes. Definitely.

Can't see it going for as low as 25k to be honest. Haven't compared with the classifieds today but my gut is it's 35 to 40k based on what I've looked at recently

Black wheel hating?

Because every car since the 1910s has looked absolutely appalling with black wheels. How to make your wheels look (a) covered in brake dust or (b) invisible.

If there’s a better way to advertise the fact that you’re a lager drinking chav (or lager drinking new money Lambo fetishist), I don’t know it.

A risible fashion fk up.

And long may this fine, over a century old tradition continue, just so it continues to ps off people like you.

It will still be a thing long after you're dead and gone.

Can you fit a couple of teenage kids in the back without breaking their legs? Some of these mid size estates are pretty pokey in the back, these days. If that's the case here then surely it's not the best bang for you buck used family motor, if y ou can't actually get 'em in to it?

I'd happily blast around in that, and I'd also love to experience the engine one day too. Preferably in the first generation AMG GTS I reckon. cloud9

These were peak 'unacceptable suspension' for Mercedes. Audi played the game very well indeed, as did BMW, but Mercedes won it for me.

They haven't quite left that phase yet, and some people seem to accept their recent adaptive efforts, but this and its contemporaries were pretty much the most atrocious riding cars money could buy.

Having had 8 BMWs, and only 2 Mercedes granted. BMW will always win all day long as the worst riding cars known to anyone in my opinion for sure.

A Mercedes is like a magic carpet in terms of ride in comparison to a BMW for me. BMW seem to get a kick out of rattling your teeth out annoyingly! hehe

I checked AT beforehand to get a ballpark, and same year and similar mileage starting around £24,995 (minus whatever you can haggle off) from dealers, so I reckon anything much more than that for this one, would be a hell of a bonus!

Enjoyed mine. Mechanically robust, fantastic motor, okay gearbox, reasonable dynamics, slightly let down by Mercedes chintzy interior and crap infotainment. I did try the w204, nicer interior and looks but the bi-turbo was a much better daily.

<2018 is the way to go, pre OPF and mechanical diff. I tried the 2019 on Mercedes Benz world circuit, it felt muted and the 9 speed gearbox wasn’t a game changer.

I had the 19”s on mine and the ride was fine. No doubt the extra rubber helped.

Recently did a short run with 4 guys (5'9" to 6'1") in the saloon version and it was fine, only half an hour but would have been fine for 3hrs.

These aren't the properly compact saloons of yesteryear; sure, you can't swing your legs around like you could in the back of a LWB S' or a FFRR, but the payoff is that it'll fit in a standard parking bay...

I had one of these, the dash was a bit plasticky, but that aside it was a belter, with surprisingly impressive fuel economy from the (very) powerful engine.

As a shaven headed middle aged man, the smoked windows and black wheels ultimately made me feel a bit too much of a wanna be gangsta for my east London postcode, but that was the sole reason for moving it on.

They look like brilliant value for money now.

Agree with all of the above. Coming from a newer M4, the infortainment was like stepping back in time and my biggest gripe. I also owned an S204 C63 before the M4 so the S205 was a big step forward in every department except the theatre of the 6.2.

Mine has been reliable, one failed sensor in two years that cost c.£300. I've had a couple of stones puncture the air con and oil cooler but that's bad luck.

Well they must have been doing something right if you bought 8 of them
