Reset service light when it's overdue

Does anybody know how to reset "service required" light without OBD?
A couple of years ago I managed to reset it before it was due, but dash now says service required as though it's overdue and combinations of stalk buttons has no effect
Is the option to reset using stalk buttons only available when there is still time and mileage left?

Havent had a problem with any of the cars we have done,

Are you aware that you have to reset service light and reset oil change light as two separate operations?

That is part of the problem that I seem to have
As I recall, last time I reset it a couple of years ago I could move between the 2 oil and service settings and reset both
This time, I move through there options with right stalk button to get the Service Required message, but one there I cannot get any further. I cannot get to the service or oil countdown with any combination of button presses/holding and so cannot reset
I have tried it with drivers door open and closed, made sure handbrake is on, car is in normal, not running. I have tried starting the engine, then stop and try again, not always can't get past the Service Required message to the oil/service countdown
This is why I was wondering if the stalk reset was only an option of there was still time or mileage on the countdown and once it was overdue if the option to reset without OBD was gone
