I read in the paper today that construction has begun in ernest. It's set to be complete by 2009 and will be the tallest building in the world, at 1776 feet, and will also have a memorial to 9/11.

Question: What particular landmark do you think will be high on the priority list of fundamentalist terrorists?

Second question: Would you work there if you had the opportunity?

Lightning and twice spring to mind........

I would work there, just I would want an office on the ground floor or at a push the 1st floor with a firemans pole in the corner.

If Lightning does strike twice, how strong is this new building?

Lightning strikes in the same place twice quite a lot if the factors that attract it remain.

Hopefully it won't reprise the design fault that caused the floor beams to sag when heated by the jet fuel fire and drop from their hangers which is what triggered the collapse on 9/11!

Remember, the fruitcakes tried to blow up The World Trade Centre with a car bomb long before 9/11. As such, it's not a case of ligntening strking twice (or thrice), more a case of "stating the bleeding obvious". Having said that, I love the American attitude, "you knocked down our building so we're gonna build an even bigger one".

This is assuming the same method of demolition will be used by the terrorists. I imagine there are hundreds of ways to collapse a tall building.

As long as they're mounting loads of these up and down the entire building, I don't see why not!

I thought it was canned because a) It's an ugly POS, and b) Too much of a risk?

It was on hold, but now it's been given the green light!

When I fly to NY after it's built, I'll be praying that the pilot doesn't wander off course! I reckon the authorities will have some radical contingencies if planes get too close!!

I heard that they are just going to make it out of solid concrete and paint trompe l'oeil office scenes on the outside, that should fool them when they come again.
An idea that came stright from the president's office so I hear.

Yes. It wouldn't be cheap, but you could certainly design something to resist such a crash and remain upright. It wouldn't be as elegant as the twin towers were, however (lots of slim pillars and open floor area).

Freedom Tower

I hate the name. It screams that they just don't get it. Any of it. At all.

Just plain The New Tower would of done.

Sorry but New Tower wouldn't have done. Freedom Tower might not be the best name, but the name does need to remind people, or maybe more importantly will teach those to young to remember what happened there. I don't think using freedom in the name is so bad anyway, after all it is one of the most important things Western civilisation and liberal democracies stand for, and one of the main things that the perpertrators of the atrocity and their like stand against.
