Test drove a 2 year old Outback today and was quite impressed - expected to hate the CVT but it was actually pretty well resolved and felt smooth and effortless as long as you didn't just slam your foot down. Very comfortable and confidence inspiring at speed on rural roads combined with a general feeling of durability meant that we could probably deal with the fuel consumption if it's as reliable as Legacies of old.
Has anyone put any serious miles on a CVT Subaru? The car I drove had only done 15k or so but I'd be buying to ideally keep the car for 10 years or 150k.

I don't have an answer but watching for replies with interest! My Forester is on 200,000km now (traditional auto) and I'm struggling to think of what I would replace it with other than another Forester Has anyone put any serious miles on a CVT Subaru? But after the SH model (my current car) they moved to CVT from SJ onwards. Experience with CVT so far has not been good - Nissan gearbox died after 6 years...Check out subaruoutback.org, a US forum - it’s NOT littered with people having cvt issues! They’ve had the Gen 6 for a couple years more than here so some people have got up to big mileages already. Also some of the Gen 5 owners have really high milages too.
I like the gearbox, controversial I know. Similar to you I’m aiming to keep mine a long time and i have no worries on longevity (20+ years of Subarus and never an issue so far, so I don’t expect any issues with this one either).

The only negative comment I see cropping up is that they limit torque of you get into a situation that can heavily overstress them.
Usually, this is our friends in the US trying to crawl one up a mountain pass with two wheels hanging in the air. I figure if that's a limitation, they don't sound like something I'd worry about pottering around the UK.
