Advise please:
Years ago when I asked this question the answer was 964RS (this was back when a good one was £25k, about same as an R300) so I duly got one and it’s true, an involving drive, more comfortable than a seven, just a great car.
Have a Mazda3 as sensible car.

So, what car is the answer now please hive mind?

Depends on your budget and requirements for the second car! But my R300 is paired with a Boxster and the two suit my needs well.

Granted we have a sensible family car, a Volvo XC60 but that’s my wife’s car so doesn’t really count!

It’s a Boxster 981 2.7 PDK car which is my daily. As I say, it suits my circumstances, although I’m looking at swapping to a 718 car next year as my commute is changing and I want a more modern version of what I have to keep very long term. The flat 4 isn’t an issue for me and the opportunity to spec a new car to my taste is one I don’t want to pass up.

I think the answer to your question is very dependant on your usage case for the second car. But that said some form of Porsche is probably still the answer, the key for me is the Boxster strikes the right balance between handling, involvement, practicality and performance. And depending on your stance for each of those qualities, another Porsche will probably fit the bill.

I had a Boxster 986s. Which are great with lovely handling, creature comforts & two boots.

Though I found the Boxster and 7 were a little too close, and, replaced the Boxster with a 996 C2 Coupe Manual. Which is fantastic.

Now the 7 isn’t road legal I hanker after an Elise S1, if only money & space would allow.

For me, an Alpine A110 - nearly as quick, civilised enough without being too much of a limo and Jekyll and Hyde as far as driving manners and driven sensibly good on fuel
But then again the "sensible" car is an Alpina D3 touring

I got a Cayman 2.9 to go with my old Supersport. Like the OP's it was more comfortable than the 7. Quelle surprise!!

Lovely stuff, I'd love an Alpine, but as the more sensible of my 2 cars, it wouldn't tick the 'carry the dog in the back' box.

I've had a Megane 280 Cup for the past 6 years. There aren't many good manual hot hatches left (and certainly none at a reasonable price, have you seen the cost of a Civic Type R now?!).

Fun to drive, lots of room for the dog, comfortable. I think the old 250 Cup was a better drive, but overall this is probably the better car.

As a sports car companion, I'd probably say Alpine, GR86 (if you can find one), or maybe the new Lotus Emira. I've toyed with the idea of getting an Elise 220/250 Cup, but with only one garage space, it's that or the Caterham.
