Insurance for dog recommendation

Afternoon all, we are picking up our 8 week old black Labrador boy on Thursday and want to get him insured. Pet Plan seem to be quite expensive, Tesco Pet Insurance is about half the price but has anybody used them in anger as it were? Any other recommendations who are hassle free and pay out when needed?

We're with Tesco for our cats. No problems. One has just had a payout to the max (£10k), and with another (for the same cat) £6k a couple of years ago.

Martin Lewis currently has some cash back codes for a few different providers.

We are currently with napo I think is something like 350 for the year for a male lab on the 12k Lifetime cover 99 quid excess plan.

Two of ours are insured with Petplan. I've had insurance with them for many years and have always been very happy with them.

Usually your breeder will give you 8/12 weeks over through the kennel club and then the KC will give you various offers to continue.

If the breeder has insured them, continue that, as that way there are no exclusions for pre-existing conditions. They probably have, as I think they get cash back if the owners continue with this.

We have had Pet Plan for 10 years, it’s now very expensive, but we are still ‘up’ and it’s paid some massive bills no problem.

Petplan hands down, they have been fantastic for me as I’ve sadly had to use them trice this year alone!

Petplan has worked well for us although don’t go cheap on cover.

I went for £7k a year cover ( which I thought was a lot) but blown it completely in ‘24.

Currently sharing a £12k vets bill with them for my Springer’s badly broken elbow/leg.

We've had Petplan for 4, now 2 of our dogs/ cats. They've been great when we've needed to claim as the vets dealt directly with them and apart from an excess, didn't pay a penny for substantial bills.

Many thanks for the replies. Whilst Pet Plan appears to be expensive (£12k cover) it actually is probably the best option as so many others were insisting on a 25% contribution from year 7 onwards for any claims made.
