N00by question: dark mode

So, new owner, driving yesterday I unplugged my new phone as it wouldn't link with Android Auto.
On unplugging the phone the car's infotainment screen went into night mode, and the car's headlights came on.
It was about 3pm in the afternoon and definitely not dark outside!
Anyone got a clue what's going on?

Probably coincidence, night mode seems to come on whenever it wants, regardless of brightness / time of day.
