I need to fit anew clutch and slave cylinder to my S3, I have a few questions. Does the engine and gearbox need to come out ? Can it be done in situ, if so does the exhaust need to be removed, or anything else to get access to it. Any tips are welcome. Thanks,Marcus.

It's a tight fit but the gearbox will come out, or you could remove the engine, or you could remove them together and split once out.

"Search" is your friend, it's all been done before and threads written.

Changing the slave cylinder is definitely doable with the engine/gearbox in place. Exhaust? possibly needs to be out; however mine was already out. Nothing else needs to move.

Seriously consider fitting a single, long, flexi pipe from the master to the slave: much easier to fit!

A new clutch AND slave cylinder or just a new clutch slave cylinder (there's a big difference)!

I ended up fitting a full clutch, master and slave cylinder, it now works perfectly and is a pleasure to drive.Might as well replace the lot whilst the car is being taken apart to inspect what is broken. I now know it has been done and i can forget about it.
