It looks like I have a leak on the steering boot of my PAS rack. I have just spent some time reading about the various options when it comes to PAS. Could someone help to advise the following on a 98 450 PAS Chim;

1. If I get my rack reconditioned by Killey Clinton, what is the expected lifespan?

2. When I have read about TVR racks, they come up as being aluminium, what does this refer to? Surely not the rack material?

3. What are the weak points in TVRs own PAS rack design?

4. If converting to a Subaru classic PAS steering rack, what is the benefit? Is it longevity or is it just the availability of rack and pinions at low cost for future rebuilds?

5. If I went down the Subaru route, assuming there are no issues with using the Rover PAS pump? Or is this also a weak point?

New owner pics coming in another thread!

Cheers,
Gareth

There is the electric column option too now, expensive granted but if you get the rack refurbed for £400 and it only lasts a year then it starts to look a bit more sensible.
Im not against the Scooby conversion i just found it a bit of a pita to do personally, i suppose once its done though you shouldnt have many problems.
Maybe you should have pushed Amore to sort this before purchase or is it something you found out later?
Maybe the warranty will cover it.
Looks a lovely car tbf though.

Hi, wondering what solution you landed on here? Mine has started to drop PAS fluid on my garage floor. Thanks, Alex

I know I'm going to get shot down in flames at this suggestion, but have you considered trying some 'Stop Leak'? PAS fluid was leaking badly from the rack of my Triumph Stag and I thought, that I'd nowt to lose before shelling out hundreds of pounds for reconditioning. It worked perfectly!

Had Woody at TVR101 take a look last week. Turns out just a torn gator and the seals will last for quite a bit longer he said. I'd be keen to know how long life is expected out of one should i do an OEM refresh in the future.
