A chicken wing is made up of three pieces: the drumette, the flat (or wingette) and the tip:

A plate - or portion - of 'flats' should not be called wings as they are only one-third of a wing. To qualify as a wing, it should be at least the drumette and the flat to count as one. Minimum quantity for a starter should be three (whole) wings and a 'main' portion should be at least five.

Hey, great post. And the fact you spent the time making up the image to explain it.

Google Image find, actually. Tried to credit the source but that too hoisted its images from all over the internet.

Wanted to start off with basic facts and not turn it into a full on rant about (mainly) Turkish ocakbasis serving six 'wingettes' and charging full whack for what they pitch as wings when they're clearly one-thirds. Some chain pubs sell them by the bucket which is excusable IMHO.

I like wings. I think they still are massively underrated.
