Speedo / Dash Not Working

I bought a 2012 Mini Cooper S recently, it has only done 10,450 miles but was sat in a garden for around a year without being driven. It's Just been fully serviced but the Speedometer and dash do not work, there is no life at all. I have been told it will need to go to BMW to have the control panel replaced which will cost £700 plus VAT and Labour!! Surely there must be a way to re boot the original by someone with the correct software to code the part.? Any ideas how I can swerve going to BMW.? anyone else had this problem ??
