Hi everybody, I have inherited a 2008 635d with 54,000 miles on it which I would rather like to keep. But since it is a diesel, I will be doing mostly short journeys a couple of times a week; say 3-4 miles per trip. However once a month, I need to go on the motorway to visit family 30 miles away (most of that is motorway miles).
So my question is that would this be OK with the DPF?

Cheers.

Fine, sort of. Not the best engine for short journey's as they like to get up to temp and be used properly. You'll go through fuel quickly with those distances. Ideally you give it a good run regularly (more than once a month) if you can... All to do with the DPF and EGR etc

A steady drive at speed, getting the engine up to running temps will keep them both happy; as will regular oil & filter changes (once a year minimum IMO)

If it was an LCI/EU6 35d it would be absolutely fine, but a 2008, I'm not so sure as it's much older fuel management. Should be OK though.

As well as an LCI/EU6 330d, I have a 2009 Golf TDi which must be what, EU4? That has done nothing but shop runs for the last 4 years as it's the dump run beater, and the DPF has never been a problem on that, and neither has the 30d and that sits in heavy traffic every day for 90 minutes.

In wouldn't worry about it personally.

I think 2008 is Lci, changeover 2007 ?

Surprisingly good car, was to me and mine was older, with more miles, used it for 11 mile, 20 minute commute with no issues for quite a while, fuel consumption was not bad at all.

I did a shorter commute for years, 4 miles, in a 2003 530d 22500 mile shed, manual, and averaged 50+ mpg with other London driving, about the same as it did fastish on the motorway.

Put a good dpf additive in when you do the motorway run if it concerns you, and keep the revs high on that run, one way at least, its a freebie you like, enjoy it.

Living in London, and always running a diesel runaround, I have never had a DPF issue, EGR yes.
