Who fancies a risk?

Although, maybe it's not such a risk - offer £10k, rebuild engine for £20k?

It is 2004 so there might be more reliability issues from memory? (Different factory or something to later DB9s?)

Yeah i've seen that car.

So if it's an engine out job your looking at around £5K, engine rebuild around £10K plus fluids and other parts around £1K

Total around £28K ish

You can just about get a 2008 glass key for that!!

I know as i'm currently taking my engine out at home, obviously if you do the work yourself you will save alot of money.

I'm sure I could take the engine out myself. It's the putting it back that's the issue. biggrin

"Hi, is that Bamford Rose? Yes, could you put my engine back in my DB9? I had a go myself but it's not quite there yet and I have a box of spare bolts."

Anyway, yeah, so £28k for a DB9 that doesn't have engine tick problems. Isn't too bad for someone who doesn't mind dealing with a problematic engine.

I've been looking at used DB9 prices for the past 6 months. They don't shift easily and some of the same cars are still for sale, it seems asking prices are slipping for the older models too.
I'd think you could buy a early car with no known problems for less than £28K now and not have the grief of a rebuild ?

Aren’t the bits left over after any car job simply to be characterised as “adding lightness” a la Colin Chapman? That’s what I always tell myself.

The engine can be turned into a nice coffee table, the front seats a cool set of gaming seats for the kids, the rear seats a nice sofa to sit on in the garage and rest your feat on the V12 engine coffee table. The rest could be worth something to someone in parts smile

£10k could be worth all that!

Anyone tried to put a Jaguar Supercharged 5.0 V8 in one?

Could be a fun project if you are handy with the spanners.

From what I understand, any 450bhp one is prone to the V12 tick so it's a rebuild in the making. Happy to be corrected but that's what I understand is the viewpoint of Bamford Rose.

If I had the time, I'd rather just buy one where I don't have to play "hunt the tick" and know that it's already an issue that needs dealing with.

One thing that I started wondering - does a rebuild mean that the V12 tick will never happen?

I'm sure it is possible for someone who knows what they're doing. I was thinking from the viewpoint of having a DB9 to drive.

Aston don't have any rebuilt engines for these anymore. If the liners have moved and combustion gasses have got between the liner and the block (this is a common fault with this engine) you then have quite a problem.

I thought you could get BR to fix your engine tick?

I'm from the sticks and it was common when I was a kid to keep a scrapper/spare car of whatever you were running at the time and just use it for spare parts. Y

When ready to change car, we used to sell off as many remaining bits (all via the classifieds, pre ebay) before offloading whatever was left to the scrappy.

You still see folk obviously doing this a lot in rural areas of France.

For anyone with a keeper DB9, a willingness to self maintain, and barn/garage space, 10k seems a reasonable investment in an absolute mountain of spares - and if minds change, there's always ebay, we are all aware of the prices of spares from specialist breakers.

It's a good idea. Not something I'd do (I don't have a barn or spare garage).
