I've just been refused an RBS credit card because of negative information from a previous address, now bearing in mind that I've never had a problem with any sort of finance and in the past 2 year I've opened another credit card and got a £115k mortgage, how can this be?

I'm absoloutly fuming!!!

Obviously from the title you know who gave you the credit rating. Get your report from them, used to cost £2, and then set the record straight. They have to alter the records.

Sometimes people get refused because they don't have a landline number and just use mobiles. This is a big negative mark in credit scoring.

I agree.

Friend of mine on £13K & a year & renting applied for the same Credit Card as me (me on "somewhat" more than his wage & with a mortgage)& received said Credit card with a limit 3 times more than me !!

PS, anybody on here who works for one of those Agencies. Any tips so as to (legitametly) improve our Credit score ?

Could be someone else listed at that address thats flagging it as bad.

Credit scores are funny things, not something to lose sleep over though.

I had trouble with this a couple of years back. Refused for a credit card and told that they couldn't divulge exactly why I was refused, but that I could get my credit report from Experian, which formed the basis for their decision.

Paid for a report from Experian and there was nothing negative on there at all. Phoned credit card company back and told them this and, after 10 minutes of head-scratching at their end, they couldn't work out why i'd been refused and subsequently issued me with a card.

Sounds like a great system

Heh company I used to work for used to send out letters just like that.

Nothing especially wrong, just didnt meen our criteria. Did confuse some people though. I never really liked the wording on it.

It need not necessarily be the result of anything wrong with your credit history - it could just be that don't fit the particular profile they're looking to fill.

So, for example, if you pay the card off in full every month, or don't use it a lot, they may not want to issue one to you.

It has happened to me on a couple of occasions and I apparently have a spotless A1 credit history (according to the guy at the Nationwide, when he processed my mortgage application last year - good enough for them to approve it there and then rather than waiting for the usual income reference).

As having been the victim of id theft i can assure credit ratings are something to lose sleep over.
